Blake Crouch, the author of the trilogy novel “Wayward Pines” where the psychological thriller drama TV series of the same title on Fox is based, says that the upcoming third season of the show will unlikely to have a happy ending for everyone.
Crouch hinted that Season 3 of “Wayward Pines” could focus on the deterioration of the human race and its possible extinction.
The author explained that “Wayward Pines” has always been about mankind and the idea that mankind’s time on Earth is not infinite, adding that the questions that interest people is whether mankind is facing either an absolute extinction or not or whether the species is aware of its impending extinction or not.
He also said that the third season of the TV series is likely to be its last, consistent with his book trilogy.
He added that his vision for the finale of the series will be a realistic one and will not serve as some cheesy and hokey ending.
“Wayward Pines” was a surprise hit when it first aired on Fox, but the second season’s lukewarm reviews did not immediately earn it a renewal. However, both fans and Fox CEO Dana Walden remain hopeful, details the Ecumenical News.
Crouch confirmed that he and the other executive producers of the show came up with a three-season arc so they expect to conclude “Wayward Pines” in its third season and be done with it.
The ascendancy of the Abbies
The extinction of the humankind shall be because of the ascendancy of the Abbies, which were seen in Season 2 fighting a battle with the humans.
Crouch said that Season 3 will be a study of the final hours of the human race against the ascendancy of the Abbies and it would focus into an Abbie-dominated world, reports the Parent Herald.
In Season 1 of “Wayward Pines,” the Abbies had seemed primal carnivores that were inferior to humans in intellect. However “Wayward Pines” Season 2 revealed a twist. The Abbies led by their Queen, Margaret, played by Rochelle Okoye, proved that the Abbies were far more superior in strength and speed than humans. They are also very intelligent.
During the Season 2 finale, the humans had to admit defeat and sought to save the race by returning to cryo-stasis. It became clear that the humans were really defeated by their own tendencies rather than the superiority of the Abbies.
Under threat of extinction
It can be recalled that Season 2 of “Wayward Pines” ended with the humans on the losing side in their battle against the Abbies. Forced into a corner, the humans, with the help of CJ Mitchum, played by Djimon Hounsou, decided to go back into cryo-stasis to wait for a more hopeful era sometime in the future.
It is highly possible that there will be a short supply already of humans in “Wayward Pines” Season 3 because the Abbies have already taken over the world.
Crouch explained that “Wayward Pines” Season 3 shall focus on exploring the human nature confronted by the threat of extinction of the species.
In Season 2 of “Wayward Pines,” the clash between the humans and the Abbies was the focal point of the show.
The battle to extinction remains unsettled during the Season 2 finale, which is why previous reports also have it that the upcoming Season 3 of “Wayward Pines” shall focus and explore the possible co-existence between the humans and the Abbies.
Instead of focusing on killing each other, Season 3 shall focus on the consensus between humans and the Abbies as well as the exploration of human behavior amid extinction.
In order for the show to do it, there will be a one thousand years of time jump from the Season 2 finale to Season 3 but details remain scarce at the moment.
Fans and critics are also wondering how the co-existence between the humans and the Abbies one thousand years later would happen when back in Season 2, they were wiping each other out from the face of the earth.
