‘Avatar 2’ Director James Cameron Confirms that the Sequel Shall Have a Storyline Anchored on Pandora!

In the myth, Pandora’s box is a mysterious box which when opened unleashes the bad things in the universe, appearing more as a portal to the dark side.

But in the universe of the “Avatar” film franchise, Pandora is a setting where the Na’vi tribe resides. It is the unexplored version of the earth so it is like the present universe transposed to its early and very pristine days.

Critically-acclaimed producer, writer, and director James Cameron said that the upcoming sequel to the most successful movie of all time, “Avatar 2” shall have a Pandora-based story, reports Headlines & Global News.

Immediately after the first film was released in 2009, James Cameron was already talking about what people could expect in its upcoming sequels.

He said back then that it is more likely that “Avatar 2” would be dealing with familial and imprisonment themes. He was also keen to disclose that the sequel can already stand on its own even without relating it to the first film.

Movable playdate

The sequel to the most successful film of all time, “Avatar 2” was previously reported to come out in December 2017. However a few months ago, it was announced that the release date was pushed back to December 2018. Three films will follow thereafter with a playdate of December 2020, December 2022, and December 2023.

The main reason back then for the push-back of “Avatar 2” from December 2017 to December 2018 is because James Cameron does not want the film to go head to head with “Star Wars Episode 8” which shall come out in theaters in December 2017.

However, there are now reports coming out saying that James Cameron has confirmed that December 2018 is just the target premiere date of “Avatar 2” and could still be moved if they needed to.

The director said that more than the release dates, he is actually more concerned with the gap between all four sequel releases, reports Digital Spy.

Cameron said that they have not moved the target release date thus far but he is willing to if they need to. He added that the important thing for him is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern.

He explained that the four films should be released as close together as possible.

The “Avatar 2” director said that if it is going to be an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, he wants to make sure that they are able to fulfill that promise.

Na’vi’s fight against the humans

It has been reported that “Avatar 2” shall focus on Jake, played by Sam Worthington, and Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana, and their life as a Na’vi couple.

James Cameron said that the sequel will be a family story but shall integrate the lead characters’ fight against humans.

The director also revealed recently that the viewers shall be acquainted with the couple’s children in “Avatar 2” even as the world of Pandora is also explored to the hilt.

It has been reported also that humans shall be returning on “Avatar 2” and shall be regarded by the Na’vi tribe as villains.

One of those humans who is likely to return with a vengeance is Col. Miles Quaritch, played by Stephen Lang, who, despite being killed by the Na’vis during the original film, shall reportedly come back but in another person or form most likely.

It was James Cameron who previously confirmed that Stephen Lang will be back in “Avatar 2” to reprise his role as Col. Quaritch.

When asked back then how Cameron is going to do it since Quaritch is very much dead during the first movie, the director said that nobody dies in fiction.

He did not say exactly how it is going to happen but reports have it, which was also affirmed by Stephen Lang, that Col. Miles Quaritch is expected to be resurrected in unexpected places not only in “Avatar 2” but also in the three subsequent sequels up to “Avatar 5.”

In a recent interview, Cameron was quoted as saying that Col. Miles Quaritch will evolve into really unexpected places across the arc of the four-film saga.
