While we still don’t know anything about the future of “Girl Meets World” and whether or not the show will get a fourth season, some cast members have not lost hope and are still looking forward to the possibility. Fans of the show also haven’t lost hope, and have been pressuring Disney to make a move on the situation.
So far though, we have no concrete answer. There are some rumors regarding why the network could be reluctant to bring the show back, some related to its basic premise and the way the plot will have to evolve.
It’s true that some time has already passed in the setting of “Girl Meets World”, and the show would probably have to move on to a newer, different setting if it is to continue. This could be causing some reluctance in the people behind it, and could be the main reason why we’re not going to see a fourth season.
It’s also possible that a new season could arrive in a new form, such as a spin-off show with the same character but in a new environment. There are some precedents for that in the history of television, and we certainly wouldn’t put it past the Disney Channel to go for something like that.
Some fans have suggested that complications in the filming schedule could be the culprit behind the delay – and the talks of a possible cancellation – but considering how the show has been released up until now, this doesn’t really seem to be the case.
Ratings seem to be out of the question either, as the show has actually been doing very well on the critical front season after season, and both fans and reviewers seem to be fond of it. With all that in mind, what is the Disney Channel going for, and what kinds of expectations do they have that are not being met by the current form of the show?
One more theory that keeps getting brought up is the possibility that the show is getting continued, but the producers are just keeping quiet about it in order to surprise their fans. That would be a bit strange though, considering how open they’ve been with regards to their filming in the past, and how much they’ve obviously relied on the hype among their fans in order to get the most out of the show.
There’s also the fact that it would be unusual for a Disney Channel show to go on for less than four years, as this is a pretty standard trend in the network. This is actually the main reason why some fans are convinced the show isn’t going anywhere, and that the current situation is just a temporary misunderstanding.
For what it’s worth, fans of “Girl Meets World” started an online petition to get the network’s attention, but even though they managed to collect the required number of signatures in a relatively short period of time, this still didn’t seem to get any response out of the channel.
The show could also get picked up by Freeform, but that would rely on the Disney Channel giving up their rights to it, which might not be so straightforward. The channel tends to be a bit protective of its brands, and considering how recognizable “Girl Meets World” is, it would make sense for them to hold on to the name for as long as possible. The rights do belong to the same entity in the end of course, but it also matters which specific channel is chosen to air the show.
