After the results of this year’s Emmy Awards, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” has officially won more Emmys than any primetime TV show in history.
The fantasy drama won three awards at the 68th annual Emmy Awards pushing their total awards to 38 — one more than “Frasier,” which was the previous all-time record holder with 37 wins.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the record is particularly impressive given “Frasier” was on air for 11 seasons before reaching 37 Emmys while “Game of Thrones” will just be entering its seventh season next year.
The media outlet notes that “Fraiser” was only competing in an era of few TV channels, whereas this year offered more than 400 scripted shows.
EW notes that the fantasy-drama has an advantage of being lavishly produced that it vied for many categories such as special effects and costumes.
“Game of Thrones” picked up awards for Best Writing in a Drama Series, Best Directing in a Drama Series, and their second consecutive win for Best Drama.
Despite not bringing home the Emmys for the acting awards, most of the “GOT” stars nominated said that having their names alongside other talented people is already an honor.
During the Emmy’s Creative Arts ceremony last weekend, the show was the most honored drama series after picking up nine wins and surpassing long-time title holders “Hill Street Blues” and “The West Wing.”
The 68th annual Primetime Emmy Awards was held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California last Sunday and was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
The ceremony has had the most diverse nominations in any awarding ceremony. Aside from “Game of Thrones,” other big winners were “The People v O.J Simpson: American Crime Story,” which bagged five awards including Lead Actress and Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.
During the Emmy’s red carpet, Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark, gave fans a clue about what to expect for the upcoming season.
Speaking to E!, the newly-blonde Turner says that she was left speechless when she read the scripts for Season 7. She adds that the new season will be crazy and it will satisfy fans a lot.
Fans will remember that last month, Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, went on Twitter to share her excitement upon reading the script for the Season 7 premiere.
Williams says that fans should prepare themselves for what’s coming and then adds that no one will be ready for what will happen. Safe to say that Sophie and Maisie were really blown away by the events of Season 7.
Many changes will come in the next season of “Game of Thrones.” For one, it will consist of seven episodes only, three episodes less of their usual order.
Second, the season will premiere later next year compared to previous seasons. Series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss has stated that the storyline of Season 7 will be needing a gray weather.
Fans will remember that during the final episode of Season 6, Sansa had a grim weather forecast. Apparently, that forecast will play out in the upcoming season which means there is a necessity to delay production because the sunny weather doesn’t serve much to the story’s purpose.
This means that the show won’t be eligible for the Emmy’s next year. HBO has stated that it was a difficult decision, but ultimately, they will do what is best for the show to satisfy the fans.
HBO has also announced that the hit series will be ending after season 8. Benioff and Weiss stated after the Season 6 finale that they feel that the story will be wrapping up in 13 episodes.
