Some fans of “The Big Bang Theory” have been worried about the show’s future, claiming that it’s become too stale and needs to take some more risks. Even introducing some new characters would liven things up right now, and it looks like this is exactly what we’re getting in the upcoming season 10, as there has been a lot of talk about the appearance of Penny’s mom for a while.
We’ve been hearing about her character for quite some time from Penny herself, but she was never explicitly revealed. Now, the producers are not only planning to bring her on the set in the very first episode of the new season, but there will be some tension between her and her daughter right from the start.
There could be many interpretations to that, and Penny has also kept her lips quite tight about her mother, so we don’t know what to expect from neither her character, nor the conflict she could have with Penny. However, it does sound like the kind of development that could work in the show’s favor right now, so we’re curious to see what the producers could do.
Penny’s brother Randall will also show up in the new season, and he will probably be a source of some drama as well, being an ex-convict. It’s also possible that the writers want to show that he has changed and he re-enters Penny’s life in a positive way.
Knowing the nature of the show’s protagonists, bringing in characters like those is guaranteed to produce some explosive moments, and fans are already excited to see what could happen between Sheldon and Penny’s brother Randall, for example. There is definitely a lot of potential for some hilarious developments in there, and it would be a refreshing change from the pace of season 9.
Not that the last season was without any major developments – in fact, a lot happened that advanced the show’s story; and yet, at the same time, many fans apparently felt like those things were just building on events we’ve already seen in the past, and the show is in need of something more drastic.
It’s good to see that the producers are listening, because “The Big Bang Theory” has been on thin ice a bit lately. Even though the show still has an active following and plenty of goodwill among its fans, viewership has declined a bit, and ratings could also use some improvement. Some producers would have preferred to just let the show’s popularity die down gradually as they stop paying attention to it over time, but it’s clear that the people behind “The Big Bang Theory” have a strong motivation to keep it good for as long as possible.
Some fans have also been disappointed with the slight change in the direction of the show’s humor over the last few seasons, but others claim that this was an inevitable change, given its premise and format. The light geeky jokes that everything started with were good for a while, but they did not have enough substance to keep the show active for so many seasons. It was obvious that the producers needed to make a change sooner or later, and it’s good that they have decided to explore new directions for the show’s writing.
