Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen will be against two new supervillains in the upcoming season of “The Flash.” Aside from that, another universe will be introduced.
Fans will remember that back in Season 2, Earth 2 universe was introduced which featured another persona of the Central City characters.
Producer Todd Helbing dishes out on Season 3’s new big bad. Helbing says that one will be Savitar, one of the more obscure speedster villains while the other one will be Doctor Alchemy, one of Allen’s oldest foe from the comics.
Back in Season 1, Barry faced an evil speedster in Eobard Thawne also known as the Reverse Flash, played by Matt Letscher. In Season 2, Teddy Sears’ Hunter Zolomon a.k.a. Zoom plagued Barry’s world.
Helbing described Savitar in the series as ‘The Dark Master of the Speed Force.’ In the comic books, Savitar became obsessed with speed after being hit by lightning.
Savitar can protect himself in a null-inertia force field, give speed and kinetic energy to objects or people.
Helbing says that fans should look forward with how Alchemy’s abilities mirror the Flash in an uncanny manner. Speaking to Collider, Todd said their version of the villain in the series will be special.
He said that he’s excited for fans to know the Alchemy because they never really had an alchemist as a villain. The new big bad can apparently take X and turn it into a Y and the story of how he obtained his powers is almost similar to Barry’s.
In the comics, the Albert Desmond’s version manipulated elements with the Philosopher’s Stone, but just like the rest of the villains in the series, it sounds like this ability will be a metahuman trait.
During the show’s panel at the recently held San Diego ComicCon, the cast previewed a trailer that gave fans quick glimpses of both baddies, including Savitar facing off against the Wally West Flash and Barry seeing a vision of the word ‘Alchemy’ written out.
Speaking to IGN, Todd says that it is a necessity for Allen’s alter ego to face off against a metahuman whose powers can rival or overpower his own.
Todd Lasance has been tapped to portray Savitar while no actor has been announced yet on who will play Doctor Alchemy.
It’s also interesting to see what timeline in the story will these villains fight The Flash and how are they going to play out this season.
Helbing also hints at transmutation being the recurring theme in the upcoming season. When the new season kicks off, Barry will be living in the Flashpoint timeline which he created in the Season 2 finale.
After dealing with Zoom, Barry made a decision to speed back in time to the night his mother died to stop the Reverse Flash from killing her thus changing everything in his world.
Helbing teases that while Barry’s decision will bring him the life that he’s always dreamed of with his parent, the ripple effect that he’s created seems to have irrevocably changed his past and predetermined his future anew.
The season premiere, aptly titled “Flashpoint,” will show the major changes in his life such as his memories of the original time slowly being erased and the people in his life having a different relationship towards him.
Speaking during the TCA summer press tour, executive producer, and Todd’s brother, Aaron Helbing says that the season will be on a lighter tone, unlike the second season.
He says that with the introduction of Zoom, the show was bound to go dark for Season 2, but now that they are introducing another universe, they opted to sway from the darker direction.
Aaron says that as the Flashpoint universe is explored, Barry will realize that there are gigantic ramifications to what he’s done.
