Neil Druckmann, the creator of the action survival horror video game “The Last of Us” has recently been quoted in a recent interview as saying that he was already working on the story for the sequel of the 2013 hit video game.
He said that “The Last of Us 2” shall involve time-jumping, which means that it could go back and forth in the past and in the future.
Accordingly, there will be a number of characters in the upcoming video game that will head back into the past to try and change things so that the infection would not happen in the future.
But it was only up to that point that Druckmann made the revelation, refusing to further divulge details, notes Game & Guide.
Some gamers believe that the plotline of “The Last of Us 2” will most likely feature both the past and future gameplay. After time-travelling into the past, the characters may then return to the future to observe the effects of what they did. It is possible that they could go back again in the past if they see that what they did has not altered the future in a positive way.
An earlier release date
While previous rumors were saying that the “The Last of Us 2” may get released on the gaming consoles in 2019 at the earliest, there are now speculations that the game might come out in 2018.
The earlier release date has made the rumor mills following a leaked photo from “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” featuring a pregnant woman with a mask holding guns while exploring a desolated place.
Many believed that the woman is Ellie from the original “The Last of Us” video game. Although the leaked image did not connote any indication that the game would release in 2018, some observant and keen gamers and critics somehow made the connection or assumption.
However, since such are merely assumptions and has not been confirmed nor denied by the game developer Naughty Dog, everything remains as speculations.
A darker storyline
In addition to the time-travelling plotline, there are also reports saying that “The Last of Us 2” shall have a darker storyline when compared to the original game, notes the Ecumenical News.
It could be recalled that “The Last of Us” had a rather morally ambiguous ending, which means that the sequel might see that one of the two main characters has to go while the other one has to pull the trigger on the other.
In “The Last of Us,” Ellie willingly offered herself to undergo surgery in order to help the renegade Fireflies find a cure for the disease that has plagued the world since Ellie is immune from the virus. But if she goes under the knife, she will die in the process.
Joel did not want Ellie to proceed with the plan because he believes that there is still an option. So he killed everyone at Fireflies then lied to Ellie when she woke up.
He said that there are others like her and a cure will most likely be found. The credits of the video game followed shortly and gamers really felt that they were given a cliffhanger, similar to watching a season finale of a TV series.
According to critics, “The Last of Us 2” may see Ellie getting the right motivation to kill Joel, which is why there are also rumors saying that Joel shall no longer be part of the sequel.
While Druckmann did not confirm the death of Joel, he did say that the violence in the game had weight with that of the real world.
“The Last of Us” showed to gamers the various repercussions of resorting to such actions.
Druckmann made the statement while being interviewed by the Southern California Public Radio where he also said that the way he creates the narrative for Naughty Dog video games is quite different from how movie productions go.
