After a successful first season, “Supergirl” is coming back for another round of episodes, in an announcement that brought happiness to fans and cast members alike. There was a lot of worrying in the beginning about how the show would work out, and whether it has a viable potential audience. And now that it’s clear that there is definitely a lot of potential in that idea, we expect to see it explored in a lot of detail over the next season (and hopefully additional ones after it).
One of the things that fans have been talking about the most is the presence of Superman in the plot – or rather, his absence from season 1. Now, for the second season, the producers have decided to finally bring the iconic character on the screen, portrayed by Tyler Hoechlin. We don’t know how deep his involvement in the plot is going to be, but hopefully his role will be a bit more developed than just the occasional cameo appearance.
It’s also been implied that things between Superman and Supergirl aren’t exactly smooth, and we might see them arguing quite a lot as the season progresses. On one hand, this is a good indication that the writers have something more serious planned for the character in terms of the frequency of his appearances. On the other, it also means that they’re trying to develop him in a more interesting way. They could have always gone down the easy route and made him pretty much identical to Supergirl in terms of attitude, but this would make for some pretty boring interactions between the two characters.
It sounds like the issue for him stems from the fact that Supergirl doesn’t see her powers the same way, and she treats them less responsibly. This is likely going to be a major source of issues between the two characters, and we’re curious to see what kinds of discussions the writers are preparing for them. There’s definitely a lot of room for some deep, philosophical conversations in there.
Other than that, season 2 is expected to bring some more tightly focused, detailed storylines compared to the first one. Season 1 could be seen as a more experimental set of episodes, testing the waters and trying to find a good direction for the show. Now, in season 2, the producers are actually going to put everything they’ve learned to good use, and will hopefully deliver a story that has fans glued to their seats from start to finish.
This means that we’re likely going to see some more focused storylines, instead of plots that go all over the place. The inclusion of Superman is sure to add to that as well, though we’re not sure how the character is going to be implemented in the overall plot so far. As we said above, it’s clear that there will be some conflict between him and Supergirl, but beyond that, anything is possible. He could be like a mentor figure to her, or he could play a much more minor part in the plot.
One thing is clear though – the producers of “Supergirl” should definitely take a step back and carefully evaluate everything about the first season before commencing their work on the second one. They’ve obviously struck gold with this idea, and should think carefully about the kind of direction they want to take it in if they don’t want to ruin what they have.
