Despite rumors that there is a possibility that the British-American horror drama series “Penny Dreadful” might get revived for a fourth season following its rather abrupt and forced ending during the Season 3 finale, creator John Logan says otherwise.
The showrunner said that the series and its storyline are all drained out and it is time for the series to end on Season 3. He also denied speculations that “Penny Dreadful” would have its Season 4 aired on Netflix or any other network for that matter, notes Game & Guide.
However, loyal fans of the Showtime TV series are all hopeful that a Season 4 of their favorite show will eventually happen although nothing seems to be going on as far as discussions with other networks or streaming service are concerned.
The disappointment of fans cannot equate to the disappointing ratings of “Penny Dreadful” Season 3 so much so that the eighth and ninth episode of Season 3 were actually aired back-to-back as if the network really wanted to get the show off the air and its programming really fast.
While most fans have been expressing their disgust to the cancellation of the TV series for its fourth season, the most that they can do is to air their gripes on social media but not so much on the ground.
Rumors of a spinoff
It was clear that “Penny Dreadful” had its ‘The End’ during the ninth and final episode of Season 3 which means that it is all over for the show.
So having a Season 4 coming after a ‘The End’ would really make the show itself and the showrunner look ridiculous.
That being said, the subsequent speculations that came about are saying that it is not a Season 4 per se of “Penny Dreadful” but a possible spinoff TV series, reports the Parent Herald.
Incidentally, it is not just the fans who were upset that “Penny Dreadful” had to end after Season 3. Even Billie Piper, who plays the role of Brona Croft and eventually Lily Frankenstein, was also surprised with the rather sudden end of the TV series.
Piper said that she was really upset with the way things wrapped up in Season 3. She said that it was really pretty upsetting for her as an actress but she added that sort of worked because everyone’s story got tied up and no one was expecting it to be the end.
Theories on why the show was canceled
There are only two fan theories that come to their minds. The first one is that Logan may have moved on to another project while the second one has something to do with the show’s disappointing ratings.
The bet is that the reason why “Penny Dreadful” was abruptly ended after Season 3 is because the show was not bringing in the ratings it once enjoyed during its Season 1.
Greatly feeling that they have been shortchanged by John Logan and the Showtime network for agreeing on the abrupt ending of “Penny Dreadful,” fans of the TV series have initiated two online petitions recently.
The petitions at Change.org seek to call the attention of CBS and streaming service Netflix to consider rescuing the show from cancellation and approved it for a Season 4.
However, the petitions do not seem to have a solid footing at this point since Vanessa Ives, the series female protagonist of “Penny Dreadful,” played by Eva Green, already sacrificed herself during the Season 3 finale.
She apparently chose to die for the betterment of the earth as her death meant that the hold of Christian Camargo’s Dracula on her is removed and she surrendered her soul to God.
Vanessa requested Ethan Chandler, played by Josh Hartnett to pull the trigger on her and end her miseries.
