“Rick and Morty” quickly took TV audiences by storm when it launched, and it’s currently one of the highest-rated shows in its respective categories. The producers of the series were quick enough to latch onto its success and have been engaging with their fans on a regular basis, keeping them entertained in various ways outside of the show itself. And just recently, they’ve announced something that should interest gamers curious to explore the world of Virtual Reality – “Rick and Morty” is getting its own game in this genre!
“Virtual Rick-Ality” will allow players to walk around Rick’s garage/laboratory and play with the different objects scattered around it. We’ve specifically been shown a teaser of the player touching a Plumbus, and we expect to see various other references to events from the show all over the game.
It’s been confirmed that the game is coming to the HTC Vive, but other platforms are still under question. Depending on the amount of content included, it could be a massive hit if it’s released for other devices as well, so we wouldn’t be surprised if that’s also on the table.
It’s also worth noting that the game is actually based on a previous project by the same developer, which was basically the same idea with a different skin on top. Or rather, “Virtual Rick-Ality” is the other way around – but in any case, the developer claims that it took him quite a while to complete the project. That doesn’t really sound surprising, given the complexity of some details we’ve seen on the show, and if they wanted to make the world of the game rich and interactive enough, that wouldn’t have been a simple task.
We don’t know if we will get a chance to explore other parts of the “Rick and Morty” universe once the game launches, but it’s claimed that it will actually feature quite a lot of content other than Rick’s garage, including portals to other dimensions. It’s entirely possible that we might see areas that haven’t been explored on the show (yet), which would be a perfect way to expand the already vast universe of the series before the next season arrives on the screen.
It’s actually a great idea to explore more ideas for “Rick and Morty” in this manner, as the show has a huge potential for lots of interesting places, characters and storylines. We’ve only seen a small fraction of Rick’s adventures so far, and while season 3 should show us a lot more, there’s only so much that the producers can show while keeping things contained on the screen in the end. Because of this, the idea for a virtual reality game was met very warmly by fans of the show, and we expect that other shows will attempt exploring that in one way or another over the next few months if it takes off.
Of course, it can be argued that not many other shows have the kind of potential for a game of this type like “Rick and Morty” does, but there are still various ways to expand the universe of a show through this form of media. Games have proven to be a great storytelling tool when used correctly, so it’s possible that we might see more from other producers soon enough. Virtual reality as a whole is really starting to take off too.
