The seventh and last film of the horror suspense film franchise “Saw” was released to global theaters in 2010 and had the title “Saw 3D.”
It seemed to have drew the franchise to a close back then as it tied all loose ends and finally put an end to the story of the Jigsaw killer, played by Tobin Bell, who had the eerie habit of trapping his victims in situations where they must choose to either live or die, notes the Independent of UK.
Apparently, the producers have decided to resurrect the franchise with an eighth movie reportedly titled “Saw: Legacy.”
The Jigsaw killer died in the third film of the franchise but for some reasons, he found a way of coming back to life over and over again so it would not be surprising if he comes out as the main villain again in “Saw 8.”
He should be. Because fans could identify with him and any “Saw” movie will not be complete without Jigsaw on it, cite critics.
Release date is set
There are not many details thus far regarding “Saw: Legacy” but according to reports, the screenplay is being written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger whose previous credits include “Piranha 3D” and “Sorority Row.”
Filming is set to begin in Toronto, Canada in September and it shall be directed by siblings Michael and Peter Spierig, who also helmed the Ethan Hawke vampire film “Daybreakers.”
Another thing that is confirmed thus far is the release date of “Saw: Legacy” which is slated for an October 27, 2017 playdate on global theaters.
There has been no report yet about the cast of characters or possible plotline for “Saw 8” but it is likely that Tobin Bell would return to reprise his role as John Kramer also known in the franchise as Jigsaw.
Famous horror director James Wan, who happened to have helmed a few films in the “Fast and the Furious” movie franchise, was actually the one who started the “Saw” franchise with the first film released in 2004.
Jigsaw will be coming back
Those who have followed the film series know that Jigsaw officially died in “Saw III” but numerous characters and copycats have taken up his legacy in the sequels, notes the Christian Today.
But he appeared in all seven films either alive or through flashbacks, and it is possible that he will be coming back via a camera footage or flashbacks for the new movie.
It is also possible that given the title of the movie, Tobin Bell shall no longer be there as John Kramer as the new Jigsaw might be his protégé or son perhaps.
Some fans and critics are also speculating that “Saw: Legacy” may already be a soft reboot of the original franchise.
By soft reboot, it means that it would be a film which acknowledges the previous films but is now set with a different antagonist, different cast, and new story that is not tied down to the older franchise.
Reports also have it that when it finally debuts in theaters next year, it shall become the only horror film that would be launching on the Halloween weekend. It would reportedly come out during the week right after the release of “Insidious: Chapter 4.”
Lionsgate Films released the first “Saw” movie in 2004 and has basically become an annual treat to horror fans until 2010. In fact, indicative of the success of the franchise, it has nurtured a significant fan base, which has been waiting since 2010 for the next installment of the classic horror movie series.
