The eighth and ninth episodes of Season 3 of the British-American horror drama TV series “Penny Dreadful” aired on Showtime on June 19 and the biggest surprise that came afterward was the words ‘The End’ after the ninth episode and just before the credits.
Shortly thereafter, series creator John Logan said that he and the network have been keeping the conclusion of the TV series secret from the fans so as not to take the sting out of the Season 3 finale.
But most fans and critics of “Penny Dreadful” do not believe John Logan is telling the truth when he said that the show is only good up to Season 3.
With the way the ending of the Season 3 was shown, it looks forced and abrupt, leaving many fans surprised and speechless, reports Movie News Guide.
The fan reaction was so negative that there are even rumors saying that John Logan and Showtime are reportedly reconsidering their decision not to have a Season 4 for “Penny Dreadful.”
However, such speculations are not based on a good footing because the show’s protagonist, Vanessa Ives, played by Eva Green, already died during the Season 3 finale.
More trickle questions left to be answered
While the death of Vanessa Ives in the hands of Ethan Chandler, played by Josh Hartnett, also means that they have overcome Christian Camargo’s Dracula character, there are still some trickle questions that fans and viewers of “Penny Dreadful” wanted to know.
Unfortunately, those can never be answered as “Penny Dreadful” will no longer have a Season 4.
In explaining the decision to end “Penny Dreadful” after the Season 3 finale, Logan said that the TV series has always been about Vanessa Ives and her struggle with faith.
He revealed that midway through Season 2 of “Penny Dreadful” last year, he was planning for a third season already. Then Logan realized that he already knows exactly where the story is heading.
Logan said that Vanessa will have that moment and the only way she can truly have it is with her death.
From there, the executive producer said that he began shaping Season 3 thinking about all the characters and how he could lead them to a place that felt like a fitting conclusion.
The showrunner explained that “Penny Dreadful” is about many things but it always boils down to one really simple thing – a woman’s journey of faith. It is about a deeply religious woman losing her God and then finds Him again.
Logan said that it was where the third season of the show headed the way he planned it. It was going to head to Vanessa sacrificing herself and reuniting with God. He also added that her death is the only way to save the character from her dark experience as well as a way for her to do for the good of mankind.
‘Stop lying to us’
But some fans of “Penny Dreadful” are adamant that John Logan is giving everyone the run-around including himself regarding the true state of the situation.
One of the fans even went on to publish an open letter directly saying that John Logan was lying to the fans. The fan asked the showrunner to stop lying and just tell the truth that his decision to end “Penny Dreadful” after Season 3 was not always his intent.
Many fans and critics are also accusing Logan of moving on with another project which is the reason why he finished “Penny Dreadful” in a lurch.
But some critics believe that it has something to do with good ratings, which “Penny Dreadful” Season 3 seems to be lacking during its eight-week run on Showtime.
