The Nintendo fighting game “Super Smash Bros 4” on Wii U became the latest to break into the 2K club in the Evolution Champion Series (Evo) tournament.
More than 2,000 gamers of “Super Smash Bros 4” on Wii U have registered to compete in the upcoming Evo 2016 tournament to be held on July 15-17 in Las Vegas, Nevada, reports Polygon.
The number has officially overtaken the 1,900 player turn-out for the same game during the Evo 2015 tournament last year. The organizers posted their congratulations to the game and Nintendo via Twitter.
Last year was also the largest tournaments ever for both “Super Smash Bros 4” on Wii U and GameCube’s “Super Smash Bros Melee” as a combined 3,000 competitors participated in the two games, although there was only a minimum overlap as only 16% of gamers signed to compete for both titles.
Evo 2016 is shaping up to be the biggest yet for the annual fighting game tournament. The event has already seen record-breaking registration number for “Street Fighter 5” with more than 5,000 competing gamers as of mid-April, which was twice as many entrants for the “Ultra Street Fighter 4” game during the Evo 2015.
Other fighting games at the Evo 2016 included “Tekken 7: Fated Retribution,” “Super Smash Bros Melee,” and “Pokken Tournament.” Deadline for signing up for the fighting game competition is on June 30. The finals shall be held at a 12,000-sitting capacity events center on July 17.
Cloud Amiibo at E3 2016
The character Cloud was the third to the last DLC character addition to “Super Smash Bros 4.” After Cloud came Bayonetta and Corrin.
It seems unlikely for Nintendo to release another new DLC character for “Super Smash Bros 4,” but reports are now rife that Cloud shall have an Amiibo figurine very soon.
The same reports also hint that the Cloud Amiibo shall be launched by Nintendo at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2016 slated on June 14-16 to be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California, reports Game & Guide.
The speculations about the Cloud Amiibo figurine began to swirl online when Nintendo’s official CPSIA certification page indicated that a Cloud miniature could possibly be revealed at the E3 2016.
Accordingly, Cloud’s recent appearance in the game sparked Amiibo rumors since the character is one of the more popular in the game. It should be noted that not all characters in “Super Smash Bros 4” have an Amiibo counterpart. There are also reports saying that the last two DLC characters to come to the game – Bayonetta and Corrin – may also get their respective Amiibo figurine down the road.
A secret conversation feature
There is a secret conversation feature in the fighting game “Super Smash Bros 4” when it was released for the Wii U and the 3DS. The feature is called Palutena’s Guidance, which is the same as the Snake’s Codec Conversations in “Super Smash Bros Brawl.”
In the game, Palutena advises Pit about the opponent that he is going up against and these conversations can only be activated on her stage known as the Palutena Temple and only once per match.
Unfortunately, Nintendo did not include these secret conversations for any of the new DLC arrivals. Each DLC fighter brings on the same generic conversations where Palutena says that he has no data on the fighter and Pit can’t believe it, even saying that the fighter might be from another dimension.
As if to make up for the shortcomings of the developer, the Zelda Universe has voice enacted its own take of the secret conversations on the DLC fighters of “Super Smash Bros 4” including Cloud, Corrin, and Bayonetta.
The Zelda Universe made the voice enactment on its YouTube channel, which critics believe is quite superb and does not feel like a fan-dub at all.
The same gamer group also updated a video back in September for the first wave of DLC characters in “Super Smash Bros 4” including Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy, and Ryu.
It has been reported in March that Patch 1.1.5 was going to be the last update to “Super Smash Bros 4” because Nintendo will start working on “Super Smash Bros 5.”
However, Nintendo pulled off a surprise in May when it released Patch 1.1.6, which brought no major changes actually but was only meant to balance changes for the DLC character Bayonetta.
