“Captain America: Civil War” was shown in 38 countries outside of the US this weekend and the results have been staggering for the third Captain America movie as it finished first at the box office in all those markets.
If its box-office streak continues, the movie is also expected to beat “Avengers: Age of Ultron” shown last year whose $946 million made it the top-grossing superhero movie of all time internationally, notes Variety.
In fact, in the UK, “Captain America: Civil War” has posted a $7 million opening day gross, which is 33% more than what “Avengers: Age of Ultron” accomplished last year.
It also chalked up $7.3 million box-office take in Mexico which is significantly above the mark set by the second Avengers movie.
The film is now open in 63% of the international marketplace, a week ahead in the US where the movie is to hit theaters on May 6. Reports have it that the superhero movie could easily rack up $200 million during its first five days in international cinemas.
When “Avengers: Age of Ultron” was released last year, it netted $212 million in the international markets in just five days.
Plenty of misses
Contrary to previous rumors and speculations regarding supposed spoilers for “Captain America: Civil War,” there are actually plenty of misses. It turns out that a good number of reports of spoilers were inaccurate.
There was a report that came out late last year that at least one Marvel superhero will die in the movie and as it turned out, there was none.
Col. James Rhodes, a.k.a the War Machine, was badly injured when he was inadvertently hit by the ray from Vision’s forehead while in mid-air. He went down hard on the ground. He was partially paralyzed but seems to be recovering well towards the end of the film.
There were also reports back then saying that the Wanda Maximoff a.k.a Scarlet Witch shall also be killed which will prompt Vision to leave the Avengers. That also did not happen.
Early this year, there were also rumors saying that the Hulk might also appear in the movie and that also did not happen.
There are three superhero additions to the Avengers in the movie – Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Ant-Man – and all three of them made big impacts and immediately connected with the audience, which is why they all deserved solo movies. Ant-Man already had his first last year while the Spider-Man shall have his stand-alone film next year. Black Panther will have his own film in 2018.
The biggest miss of them all
The biggest miss of supposed spoilers in the movie was that previous reports said that the Avengers shall be divided over the Superhero Registration Act, which is actually not true. According to rumors then, the Avengers will be divided over the issue because some of them would not like to disclose their true identities in public. There was no such plotline of such kind in the movie.
The Avengers got divided into two camps over the issue of the Sokovia Accords, which implied that a United Nations body shall be overseeing the work of all Avengers, and superheroes for that matter.
The idea is for the Avengers to report to a UN-sanction authority and also be prepared and accountable for the collateral damage that they might incur in countries as they discharge their superhero work.
It was not a contentious issue among the Avengers per se and it only got complicated when somebody set up The Winter Soldier to take the fall for the bombing of the UN headquarters in Vienna while the delegates were about to sign the Sokovia Accords. Tony Stark and his group believe that The Winter Soldier was guilty while Steve Rogers believes that his friend is not and that he was subjected to some mind control to complement his enhanced body and be a soldier of destruction.
