Half Life 3 in Virtual Reality: Could This Be Valve’s Best Move? Let’s See

A lot has been said about “Half-Life 3” before the game has even been officially announced, and even though most people have accepted the fact that Valve are most likely not actively working on it at this point, this hasn’t stopped the constant debates over what it will bring to the table. Many gamers just want to see a conclusion to the story at this point, especially with regards to the identity of the G-Man and other unresolved points, but after so much time has passed, it won’t be easy for the company to impress their fans with a good plot alone.

Valve will have to put some real effort in coming up with some original new ideas for the gameplay of “Half-Life 3” if they want the game to have any shot at success, because not much can justify the exceptionally long development period right now.

Some fans see the rise of virtual reality technology as a good answer to this situation, and this could indeed make sense if Valve pulled it off properly. VR is still in a very early stage, and developers are just starting to play around with its potential, so we expect that the landscape of those games will change significantly over the next few years.

And that could give Valve ample time to prepare something of their own – if they aren’t already on top of that. The company is known for their creative approach to their game design, and they would often rather postpone a title if they don’t have anything groundbreaking to show. “Left 4 Dead 2” was an exception to that, but the game was still received well by fans.

Considering how much “Half-Life 2” did for its time – its deep approach to storytelling, the original physics-based puzzles, as well as the Gravity Gun – the next game in the franchise will really have to raise the bar if Valve want it to have any chance on the market at all.

Otherwise, Valve could face a lot of trouble with the release of “Half-Life 3”. Gamers have been waiting for almost 10 years since a “Half-Life” game came out, and after all that’s been said about the sequel, expectations have gone through the roof. Many see the shooter as a revolutionary game that will revive interest in linear single-player shooter, while others are convinced that there is nothing Valve can do to justify that much waiting right now.

There have been some indications that Valve are working on “Half-Life 3”, and on the other hand we also know that the company has a lot of interest in VR technology. It’s not too far-fetched to put the two together and consider that they might be working on integrating this technology into the next shooter. However, this could also lead to some problems if the game is strongly based on VR technology.

It would mean limiting its release to a small niche of people who are properly equipped to play something like that, and the rest will have to either dig deeper into their pockets for a good VR kit, or wait until the tech becomes more mainstream. This could also be a hint about what Valve themselves are waiting for – perhaps they just need to see VR becoming widespread enough to make a release like this viable. At the current pace, this shouldn’t take much longer, as both gamers and developers have been displaying a strong interest in this new style of gaming.
