The second season of the American psychological thriller drama series “Wayward Pines” on Fox is set to return to the small screen in summer of this year but a lot of speculations regarding the show’s plotlines and cast of characters have been making the rounds on the internet since late last year, indicative of how popular and how widely anticipated the TV series is.
Helmed by critically-acclaimed director M. Night Shyamalan and based on the international best-selling novel series of Blake Crouch, the second season of “Wayward Pines” will pick up from where its Season 1 left off.
The producers of the TV series guarantee that the 10 all-new episodes of “Wayward Pines” for Season 2 shall be full of suspenseful drama just like its pilot season, notes the Fox website.
Accordingly, there will be a new arrival in “Wayward Pines” and he will find himself in the middle of a serious rebellion, as the residents battle over how to preserve the endangered human race.
Fox Broadcasting Company president David Madden said that “Wayward Pines” has been a huge hit for the Fox network last summer and that they were absolutely blown away by the mysterious and surprising world that M. Night Shyamalan and his team created. He added that the twisting-and-turning storytelling really drew viewers to the TV series right from Day One.
Madden also confirmed that Season 2 of “Wayward Pines” will definitely up its suspense levels and the story will pick up from where the Season 1 finale left off.
The first season of “Wayward Pines” had a 10-episode run last year beginning on May 14 and ended on July 23, 2015.
An indirect sequel
Season 2 will serve as an indirect sequel, returning to the world of the strange titular town with all new characters, details the Cheat Sheet.
The Season 1 cast of Matt Dillon, Carla Gugino, and Melissa Leo, shall no longer be returning for Season 2 even though it will take place within the same world.
Reports have it that Jason Patric has been tapped to play the new lead in the second installment of the series. Patric will reportedly play Dr. Theo Yedline, a confident and driven surgeon whose leadership skills will prove invaluable to the residents of Wayward Pines.
Yedlin is a relative newcomer to the town who awakens from the suspended animation and finds himself thrown into chaos.
There are also reports that Season 2 of “Wayward Pines” will have a new showrunner after Chad Hodge will focus on his new project called “Good Behavior” on TNT. Mark Friedman shall reportedly take over his place as showrunner. Friedman has also served as creator and producer of NBC’s 2014 TV series “Believe.”
Return to form
“Wayward Pines” is regarded by critics as the welcome return to form of M. Night Shyamalan, who is also serving as executive producer on the TV series and also directed the show’s pilot episode.
It is not yet clear whether M. Night shall be helming any of the episodes of “Wayward Pines” in Season 2, but he is certainly returning as executive producer alongside Friedman, Donald De Line, Ashwin Rajan, and Crouch.
Shyamalan is a master of the cliffhanger. He has made several films in the past that leaves the viewers to eventually find the answers to their questions themselves towards the last scenes without really explaining.
The series finale of Season 1 of “Wayward Pines” also had the same kind of twisted ending, that left audiences to wonder whether there will be a Season 2 or not of the show because, at the time of the Season 1 finale, Fox has yet to decide whether to renew the show for a second season or not.
