The CW’s supernatural drama “The Vampire Diaries” is currently receiving a major online backlash after the show killed off its LGBT characters in the recent episode.
In episode 16, entitled “Days of the Future Past,” heretics Nora and Mary Louise, played by Scarlett Byrne and Teressa Liane, respectively, met their demise in an attempt to break Leslie-Anne Huff’s phoenix sword after Nora was scarred by it.
Mary Louise was already in near death as The Armory couldn’t save her anymore. She decided to make the sacrifice by using her remaining powers to break the phoenix sword and save Nora.
Nora tried to dissuade her telling her there’s still a way to live. In the end, she decided to help her and die with her beloved.
Byrne and Liane’s characters were introduced this season as part of Lily’s heretic family. They were revealed to be in a relationship and have gone through some patches throughout the season.
With the death of the two heretics, it leaves Elizabeth Blackmore’s Valerie as the only remaining heretic witch on the show.
Fans slammed the show and expressed their disappointment on social media using the hashtag #BuryYourGays. Ian Somerhalder, who made his directorial debut through the episode, also met some bashing on social media.
Mirror UK reports that fans weren’t disappointed with “The Vampire Diaries” alone, their disappointment also goes all the way to the network as well.
Nora’s and Mary Louise’s deaths came after Lexa from “The 100,” another LGBT character from The CW hit was killed.
The website notes that TV shows in the US have killed off six lesbian characters from their shows since February, four of those coming from The CW shows.
The hashtags #BuryYourGays and #LGBTFansDeserveBetter became trending topics on Twitter in response to the LGBT characters’ demise.
The Bury Your Gays movement started when fans noticed that LGBT characters in US TV shows did not seem to have a happy ending as opposed to their straight counterparts.
The CW has not yet given any response to this major backlash. However, there are reports surfacing that to compensate for the situation, Kat Graham’s Bonnie will be exploring her sexuality in the remaining episodes of the show.
Zap2It reports that Bonnie’s sexuality may finally come into full swing as many fans have always been debating on her true sexuality.
In previous episodes of Season 7 of “The Vampire Diaries,” Bonnie had really struck a really good friendship with Nora, rendering Mary Louise jealous.
Graham herself have admitted that she’s open to the possibility that her character will be bisexual and will experiment with her sexuality.
However, fans know that flash-forwards have revealed that Bonnie will be in a relationship with Michael Malarkey’ Enzo.
Speaking of Mystic Falls’ head witch, it looks like there’s only one season left for Bonnie before she makes her exit.
According to TV Line, Kat Graham, who is one of the original cast members, said that Season 8 of “The Vampire Diaries” will be her last season. The show was included in The CW’s list of mass renewal along with its spinoff series “The Originals.”
Speaking to Us Weekly, the 26-year-old actress adds that the cast and crew will be the hardest to leave because they have grown to be her family.
Graham says that the upcoming season will be something massive for the show. The CW has not yet given a comment on Kat’s exit, but reports say that Season 8 will also be the last for the supernatural drama as well.
Meanwhile, in the upcoming episode of “The Vampire Diaries,” a fake Stefan appears and Damon and the real Stefan is in a race against time.
Episode 17, entitled “Into The Woods,” will see Paul Wesley’s Stefan waking up from his death thanks to Mary Louise’s and Nora’s sacrifice in the last episode.
