20th Century Fox made a perfect timing in releasing its featurette regarding its upcoming movie “X-Men: Apocalypse” due to hit theaters on May 27th. They released it during the Season 6 finale episode of “The Walking Dead” and as such, it certainly generated a good mileage and is now generating buzz on the internet.
A featurette is a teaser trailer with some footage of brief interviews with some of the cast or production people added to it.
The teaser did not highlight the good mutants but the big bad Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe. He has amassed the powers of many other mutants and thus becoming immortal and invincible, details Comingsoon.net.
Apocalypse is being played by Oscar Isaac, who has been typecast to villain roles because of his excellent acting, which is highlighted by his being nominated by the Academy Awards.
The latest teaser of “X-Men: Apocalypse” actually highlighted not just Apocalypse, but also his four horsemen, namely, Storm, Angel, Psylocke, and Magneto.
The ‘Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” is a figure of speech in the bible that signals the end of the world as they are the harbingers of death. In the upcoming movie, Apocalypse will wake up from his thousands of years of stupor. He will be disillusioned with the world as he finds it and he will go on to recruit a team of powerful mutants.
Magneto, played by Michael Fassbender, will be the first to join as his key horseman having been disheartened in the previous movie “X-Men: Days of the Future Past” because despite the mutants’ efforts to save the world, humans still turned against them.
Apocalypse and his four horsemen will attempt to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign.
Not about to take it sitting down
But the good mutants led by Charles Xavier, a.k.a. Professor X, played by James McAvoy, and Raven, a.k.a. Mystique, played by Jennifer Lawrence, will not take the destruction sitting down.
They will gather a bunch of young mutants to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete extinction.
Director Bryan Singer said, in a recent interview, that the decision to make Apocalypse the main bad guy in the final movie of the X-Men trilogy is just so different. He explained that the X-Men universe has always treated the theme of mutants versus humans. So having Apocalypse is a different character than viewers have been accustomed to and traditionally explored in the universe, notes Gamespot.
Singer said that Apocalypse does not make distinctions between humans and mutants. But he is certainly interested in the Earth as a whole and the purity of civilization and the strongest beings.
Having directed the first two X-Men movies and being one of the first filmmakers of the modern superhero era, Singer was asked if the deluge of superhero movies after the original X-Men films affected him. He candidly said yes.
“X-Men: Apocalypse” stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, Lucas Till as Havok, and newcomers Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Ben Hardy as Angel, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Olivia Munn as Psylocke, and Lana Condor as Jubilee.
Younger versions of the mutants
‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ is the final movie of the second X-Men trilogy that began with “X-Men: First Class” shown in 2011 and “X-Men: Days of the Future Past” shown in 2014.
In addition to featuring younger versions of the previous characters during the first X-Men trilogy, the second trilogy also featured more new and exciting mutants, with the exception of Wolverine, who is still being played by Hugh Jackman.
But the director said that the third movie is long for a good number of reasons and the most important of them is the fact that “X-Men: Apocalypse” needs to effectively wrap up the entire series.
Singer said that the movie’s cuts are a little long but the overall film is going to be a longer “X-Men” movie. He explained that in his past “X-Men” movies, he usually endeavor to keep it under two hours. However, he feels that it may not be the case for “X-Men: Apocalypse” because it actually wraps up a total of six movies.
Apart from being the longest “X-Men” movie ever according to Singer, “X-Men: Apocalypse” is set to become a glorious conclusion to 15 years of cinematic history.
