Outlander Season 2 Caitriona Balfe Explains the Tragedy of Claire’s Relationship with Frank!

Caitriona Balfe, the actress who plays the role of Claire Randall / Claire Fraser in the British-American historical drama series “Outlander” on Starz, recently spoke about the complicated love triangle of her character and the two men in her life – Frank Randall, played by Tobias Menzies, and Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan.

While Frank is her husband in the show’s current timeline of 1945, combat nurse Claire of the British Army was transported back to Scotland in 1743 or more than 200 years earlier where she met the Highlander warrior Jamie.

It was during her return through time that she came face to face with the great ancestor of her husband named Captain Jack Randall who was an officer of the Red Coats army of the King of England.

But Captain Jack suspected her of aiding the Scottish clan in their planned Jacobite rising and she was tortured. If not for the intervention of Dougal Mackenzie, her Scottish host, she would have been tortured further and raped. In order to escape persecution, she was married to Jamie Fraser.

At first, she was skeptical of the marriage for convenience but eventually she has learned to love Jamie and the funny thing is she has come to love Jamie more than Frank.

True soulmates

Because she chose to stay in the Scotland of 1743 rather than pursue going back to her time in 1945, it is obvious that Claire loves Jamie more than Frank.

In a recent interview, Caitriona Balfe explained that the tragedy of Claire’s relationship with Frank is that Frank really loves her. However, Claire loves Jamie because the two of them believe that they are true soulmates.

The actress also offered a major spoiler in the upcoming second season of “Outlander” when she said that the poor Frank will get his woman back but is already pregnant with another man’s child, details TV Guide.

And to top it all, Claire also tells Frank that she is never going to love him again, which is quite heart-wrenching and very tragic too, especially for Frank.

Balfe believes that Claire and Jamie are meant for each other though they were from different times because she says that true and equal love is something bigger than both of them and it spans time and space.

Big changes for Season 2

The second season of “Outlander” is expected to bring big changes. Based on the second book of Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” novel entitled “Dragonfly in Amber,” the second season will see Jamie and Frank setting sail for the safety of France.

It was composer Bear McCreary who recently confirmed the changes in the show as evidenced by the heavy musical shift in concert with the setting change.

McCreary said that Season 2 of “Outlander” is an essentially different show because the look is different and the costumes are opulent, forcing him to intensely researched the music of the time period.

The composer said that he always like to think that he builds historically accurate musical in-jokes that are so precise that there are about 7 to 8 people in the world watching the show who will recognize and appreciate it and say that the music being played is perfect, details Collider.

He said that the right music still helps create a sense of authenticity because it just feels authentic and it helps that it actually is.

“Outlander” shall return on Starz on April 9 for the premiere of Season 2. While the Scottish influence on the score might have already been diminished because of the change of setting, the French-inspired music was crafted with the same passion and authenticity. Bear McCreary really made sure of that.

When “Outlander” debuted on Starz last year with its pilot episode, it broke multiplatform viewing records when five million people watched the show’s premiere episode.

With the impending premiere of Season 2 of “Outlander,” the pressure is now on the series itself to either equal if not surpass the astounding viewing record of its pilot episode last year.
