Marion Barry was one of the more prominent figures in American politics, having left a significant mark on society, particularly around the capital during his time as a mayor. And while some critics like to point out the negative aspects of his career more strongly than the positive ones, it’s certain that many will remember him for his good deeds first and foremost. On Sunday, November 23, Barry passed away, with the official cause of death being stated to be related to blood pressure issues.
According to Barry’s spokeswoman, the collapsed outside of his home during the day, not long after being released from the hospital. Reports state that his death was the result of ongoing problems with his heart, related to high blood pressure, which itself was mostly caused by a kidney transplant Barry has had a few years ago. Physicians state that his blood pressure problems have been the natural consequence of complications related to his transplant, and not much could have been done to prevent the tragedy.
Barry’s career was not entirely spotless, as the mayor had some drug-related issues in the early 1990s. This was the subject of much criticism, and caused ongoing issues for Barry in his personal and professional life. However, nobody can deny his huge accomplishments during his terms as mayor of DC, particularly in terms of helping society progress and develop a better way of thinking, to the point where he was called “Mayor for Life”.
His political career continued after the crack scandal, despite the large amounts of negativity he had to endure at that time, and Barry even managed to secure a fourth term as a mayor in 1994, four years after his arrest. His reelection was surrounded by controversy, and racial issues were brought into play, despite Barry’s own attempts to prevent this from happening. It should be noted that his activities were partly aimed in this specific direction, which further added to the difficult nature of the situation.
Blood pressure has been a constant problem for modern society, and one that persists strongly, despite common efforts to raise awareness about the risks associated with such a lifestyle, and to educate people on the ways to prevent the condition from developing. High blood pressure can stem from numerous different sources, but it’s always recommended that a person undergoes a thorough physical evaluation if they find themselves suffering from issues with their blood pressure for prolonged periods of time. It’s one of the health problems that take a while to develop, and the signs are initially subtle, but once it reaches a critical state, little can be done to stop it from developing further.
