Surprisingly, there has been plenty of talk surrounding a fourth season of The Following. The reason it is surprising to many is the fact that it was cancelled and the odds are slim that it will be picked up by another network or even Netflix in the future. The Following started back in January of 2013 and featured an FBI agent that was brought into recapture an escaped serial killer, Joe Carroll. The problem is that Carroll has assembled a cult and they are working with him.
Having a serial killer against you is one thing, but when he has built up a cult following while in prison, you are not sure who you are really up against. As the FBI closes in on Carroll and his capture, it was always something the cult was doing in order to get in the way. Most of the time, the cult would sacrifice themselves to save the location of their master.
Online, the show got beat up and most of the critics were wondering how the FBI could be made such a fool. Even as a loyal viewer, you knew that it seemed that the FBI was always one step behind and that was something that was not taken lightly by the population. The final episode aired last May and since then, the only talk about the show was from those hopeful to see a The Following Season 4 on the TV Guide.
Even though the rumors are just that, rumors, there is still plenty of fans out there that are hoping to see the show come back. Bringing a show back from the dead is something that might have been a little harder ten years ago, but with networks like Netflix, it has become easier. Things that make it even harder would include the fact that Carroll is no longer alive in the show. That is not stopping fans from hoping for a fourth season and the fact that he could be replaced with another serial killer that just simply took over for Joe Carroll.
In a recent interview, the showrunner for The Following teased what the series might have looked like should it come back for a fourth season. Apparently, there were talks between the writers about where to go with a fourth season should it make sense to bring it back. At some point, the writers and showrunner are going to have to decide whether it will be worth it to bring back or just leave the show how it ended. The writers have talked about bringing in another serial killer and take the show away from the stereotypical identity of the murderer. That interview was enough to get the fans talking once again.
