People have grown somewhat used to the idea of celebrity photo leaks recently, as 2014 has been a very eventful year in this regard. It all started as a “small” trend and eventually spiraled out of control – and now, it seems that new leaks are coming out on a practically weekly basis. The latest victim to these incidents has been Draya Michele, who has had a sex tape allegedly leaked just recently.
The photos are of relatively low quality and seem to be taken in a non-professional environment, and it’s not completely clear whether it’s Draya Michele herself – but they do show her in some uncomfortable positions, and people all over the Internet have been quick to take the leak at face value, without questioning who really is in those pictures.
It should be noted that this isn’t the first time Draya Michele’s name has been in the headlines with regards to a possible sex tape leak, as there have been similar incidents before. However, the last time it happened, there was merely a threat that the leaks will get released, but nothing came out of it in the end. The event was publicized on Twitter and became news for a while, but eventually died down after nothing serious happened.
Meanwhile, experts have been expressing concern over the recent developments, claiming that all of this is certainly doing harm, but not so much to the celebrities getting affected. Most of these leaks have been the result of improperly secured cloud storage accounts, and because of this, the overall public trust in cloud services has gone down. Of course, all of these leaks could have been prevented if the owners of the pictures had approached their security more seriously, but this is more difficult to explain to people who are not that tech savvy. On the other hand, some users are convinced that celebrities must be taking proper precautions with their own accounts, especially those who have their accounts managed by experts, which makes it even more difficult to explain the importance of proper safety measures.
Because of this, cloud storage companies have been struggling to convince users that their services are a safe alternative to physical storage, as long as one applies proper security practices, and doesn’t use an obvious password or something along those lines. In addition, it’s obvious that users should never upload sensitive information to the cloud, including nude pictures – actually, especially nude pictures. And yet, when most modern smartphones automatically back up pictures to the cloud, it can be difficult to make sure that one’s device doesn’t upload pictures somewhere in a hidden manner.
