Episode 10 of Season 8 of the American crime drama TV series “Castle” that aired on Valentine’s Day on ABC saw Rick Castle, played by Nathan Fillion, making a court appearance for the first time in the show as a witness for the prosecution over a murder case that happened five months ago.
Interestingly, the episode is titled “Witness for Prosecution” and Castle was called in the courtroom to stand as an eyewitness to the murder of Sadie, a reputable reporter, by Nina, who turns out to be her lover. Sadie was played by Darlene Vogel while Nina was played by Clare Grant.
But the twist during the court trial was when mysterious Caleb Brown, barely known as a LokSat mouthpiece in the TV show, stepped in to represent and defend Nina.
Caleb spared no time in putting Castle on the ropes during his cross-examination. He brings Rick’s history of memory loss so his eyewitness account is suspect. Caleb also cited that Rick has been framed for murder in the past.
As expected, Rick fumbled during the cross-examination as he admitted that it was indeed possible that Nina was not in the midst of killing Sadie when he saw her over the body.
The flashback actually showed Rick concluding that he had just witnessed a murder because Nina immediately made a run away from the crime scene, notes TV Line.
A crime of infidelity
Eventually, it became clear during the trial that the death of Sadie was not a crime of passion but a crime of infidelity.
While Sadie and Nina were discovered to be lovers, it was actually infidelity that got Sadie killed that fateful night, when her husband shimmied up a driveway basketball hoop to presumably catch her upstairs in the act with Roger, her cameraman, only to discover that she was actually involved with a woman.
In a fit of rage, he killed Sadie then cleaned up quickly in the downstairs bathroom that Rick had been waiting to use in the first place.
With the exoneration of Nina, Ryan and Espo threw heaps and praises on Caleb Brown as a public defender. But when Vikram frets about their adversary’s new and sterling reputation, Kate Beckett, played by Stana Katic, explained that they have already found Caleb’s weakness which she describes as a monster desperate to do good.
More of ‘Caskett’ dynamics
The 10th episode of Season 8 of “Castle” continued to provide more of the dynamics of ‘Caskett’ that every fan and viewer knows and loves.
Although the episode focused more on Richard’s disappearance, it also examined the relationship that the two would have rekindled in the previous episode, complete with setting up fake stories on being cheated on while engaging in dalliances when no one’s looking, details the Latin Post.
Co-showrunner Alexi Hawley said that Castle and Beckett are back together but they are keeping it a secret. They are fighting in public and romancing in private, which adds a little spark to their relationship.
Viewers of “Castle” should expect more of Kate and Richard’s bickering fights and hidden passionate romances all throughout the rest of Season 8.
There was even one scene that showed the two apparently wishing to out-compete each other with their respective new and imaginary love interests, with Castle going on about his new model ladylove Svetlana and Kate responding with a certain Dr. Livingstone.
Incidentally, the second half of Season 8 of “Castle” shall reportedly have several veteran TV actors as guest stars.
Apart from Corbin Bleu, it is expected that the likes of Nick Tarabay, an alum of “Spartacus: War of the Damned;” Ellen Woglom, an alum of “Californication;” and Summer Glau will be featured in the remainder of the TV series for its Season 8.
Witness for the Prosecution was a diamond among the coal of this season. The twists and turns were in the murder and its solution as opposed to being in the private life of Caskett. Beckett and Castle were together both publically and privately. There were brief scenes of Martha and Alexis. Ryan and Espisito were actively involved. Overall a very good episode that it and others like it will attract both old and new viewer alike. More episodes like this and we can look forward to a season 9. Unfortunately the above article shows a continuance of the together in private apart in public farce that will have to wait until 8×16 when Beckett moves back in with Castle.
