Showtime has just released the first official trailer of Season 3 of the British-American horror drama TV series “Penny Dreadful” and the 67-second video clip is just riveting enough to scare fans and viewers of what they should expect when the show returns to the small screen on May 1.
It showed Vannesa Ives, played by Eva Green, being committed to an asylum and saying that other people think that they have seen and know evil but they have not yet seen its full might.
It also showed updates to the other main characters from the previous season including Sir Malcolm Murray, played by Timothy Dalton, and Ethan Chandler, played by Josh Harnett.
In the Season 2 finale, Ethan was shown being expatriated back to America after admitting to Scotland Yard officials that he was responsible for the grisly death of a number of people in the Mariner’s Inn.
It seems that Ethan will be back in London and he was even shown in the trailer turning into a werewolf yet again. Some are alluding that Ethan will go back to London because he wanted to find himself and state his unspoken love to Vanessa Ives.
The trailer also showed Dorian Gray, played by Reeve Carney, and Lily, played by Billie Piper, dancing on the hallway with their dance of death and destruction as their young acolyte Justine, played by Jessica Barden, approaches them.
It seems that there shall also be vampires and other creatures with fangs in the upcoming Season 3 which is why the trailer hinted that when evil spreads, dread comes for everyone, notes Collider.
The Season 3 teaser also showed John Clare or The Creature, played by Rory Kinnear, roaming the countryside.
Noticeably absent from the trailer is Victor Frankenstein, played by Harry Treadaway.
A romantic spark
Reports also have it that the third season of “Penny Dreadful” will finally see the romantic spark between Vanessa Ives and Ethan Chandler, that was already noted by the viewers last season, finally happening, notes the International Business Times of UK.
Based on the sneak peek trailer released by Showtime recently, Ethan will indeed return to London but then Vanessa shall appear to be committed to an asylum where she will be treated by American psychiatrist Dr. Seward, to be played by the returning Patti LuPone.
Also according to the synopsis of “Penny Dreadful” Season 3, a new character will be introduced who have a deep connection with Ethan. It seems likely that it would be Kaetenay, a Native American, to be played by Wes Studi, and he will become an ally of Sir Malcolm.
“Penny Dreadful” reinvents the terrifying yet popular characters from fantasy literature who join some original characters in a dark and brutal quest to save souls from demons.
Unpredictably creepy
Viewers of the popular TV series are already excited for the show’s third season given the cliffhanger that was left during the Season 2 finale which saw the main protagonists led by Vanessa Ives parting ways with one another.
The show’s second season dodged the sophomore slump curse that seemed to have been bestowed on many TV series, by introducing new characters and throwing the familiar ones into even more dreadful situations.
Season 3 will continue to build on the gains of the first two seasons of “Penny Dreadful” by remaining unpredictably creepy in a lot of positive ways while maintaining the consistency that Vanessa Ives will never be at peace with herself.
The third season of “Penny Dreadful” was announced by Showtime president David Nevins in June 2015 or even before Season 2 drew to a close in July.
