It looks like the prediction that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is going to be the biggest blockbuster movie of 2015 has come true.
The only question that remains at the moment is how far will the movie make it to the list of all-time highest grossing movies.
As of the start of 2016, the seventh installment to the epic space opera is now ranked 7th in the list of highest-grossing movies of all time. It has already bested “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” with its $1.3 billion worldwide box-office take.
It is likely to move up the ladder in the next few weeks since the movie is just barely a little over two weeks in global theaters, and is in fact, just about to be shown in other countries.
Over at the US, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has already overtaken “Titanic” as the second highest-grossing movie of all time domestically. If the movie performs the same in other countries, it is bound to overshoot “Titanic” as the second highest grossing movie of all time globally.
Critics would really be interested to know that in the event that the movie overtakes “Titanic” in the second spot, will it have enough steam to topple “Avatar” as the highest grossing movie of all time with its $2.7 billion worldwide box-office haul?
A good indicator
If its box-office performance in the US is any indicator, then it is almost sure that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is going to make it all the way to the Top 2 in the list of all-time highest grossing movies.
The movie has just surpassed “Titanic” over the weekend to become the second highest-grossing movie of all time in the US, reports Time.
Since showing on December 18, 2015, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has raked in $686 million in the box office, which is $28 million better than the official US box-office gross of “Titanic” when it was shown back in 1997.
The latest installment of the “Star Wars” movie franchise has also bested “Jurassic World,” which posted a box office take of $652 million when it was shown in June of last year in the US. In fact, “Jurassic World” was the most successful movie of 2015 until it was finally dislodged by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” before the end of the year.
On course to overtake “Avatar” in the US
Just like in the global list, “Avatar” is also the highest-grossing movie of all time in the US with its $760 million box-office haul.
Movie analysts have noted that the newest “Star Wars” flick made $600 million in the US faster than any movie in history, which actually primes it to overtake “Avatar” considering that it just needs $74 million to do so. Many believe that within two to three weeks, the figure can be achieved.
Other than the cameo roles of the “Star Wars” greats like Harrison Ford, Mark Hammill, and Carrie Fisher, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” features great visuals, snappy dialogue, and a likable cast of young actors such as Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac, notes Wired.
One critically-acclaimed book author, Matt London, after enjoying watching the film, said that the movie did something to the original trilogy in ways that the prequels and the expanded universe, though complex and controversial in some ways, never did.
He believes that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has transformed the “Star Wars” feature films from a unified story with a satisfying ending into just another serialized sci-fi franchise like “Star Trek” or the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
London also said that the movie is for juvenile adults who have loved “Star Wars” their whole lives and are now grown-ups. They are also the type who hates the prequels, and wants a “Star Wars” that’s just for them.
