It’s never a bad idea to try something new for one or two episodes in a TV show, as long as the experiment is carefully thought out and executed properly, and of course, as long as the producers make sure that the idea doesn’t go on for too long. After all, fans get attached to their favorite shows for particular reasons, and changing the premise permanently is rarely a good idea. The producers of “Supernatural” seem to get it, as they are trying something fresh for episode six of the show’s tenth season.
For this episode, fans will see Sam and Dean playing the roles of detectives as they’re tackling a murder case. The episode will take place in the mansion of a wealthy family, where the murder has taken place. Bobby has contacted the duo for help, as he’s directly involved in the case this time, and they are on the job. His specific involvement is actually quite interesting, as it turns out that Bobby may be entitled to a hefty inheritance. The episode’s preview actually didn’t make it clear whether Bobby himself is the one about to get the fortune, or a relative of his, but either way, fans familiar with the character’s previous appearances on the show should know to expect a very interesting story, especially when it comes to the interactions between Bobby, Sam and Dean.
Of course, “Supernatural” is a show that’s known for pulling interesting twists, and completely changing the story from what it’s implied to be in teasers and trailers. Even though the preview for episode 6 shows a story without any supernatural elements this time, it’s very likely that this exactly is the hidden twist in the new episode. After all, a story like that – the mansion of a rich family, a murder case and a huge inheritance – is exactly the kind of good premise that could be used to set up a good demon plot.
The producers have previously hinted that they could try shaking things up in this season, and this may not be the only interesting change to the basic formula that fans will see over the next few episodes. Of course, as we described above, this is an idea that should be approached with care, as it has the potential to alienate some old-time fans if it goes on for too long.
There has been no indication so far about the other potential changes that we could see until the end of the season, although it’s possible that the detective premise could be extended for one more episode. This mostly depends on how the story is going to play out in episode six.
