ABC has officially cancelled the Canadian police drama TV series “Rookie Blue” on October 19 after six seasons on the air.
The show was also being shown on Global TV in Canada and it is most likely that the local network has also decided against renewing the show for a seventh season.
Reports have it that the producers, the showrunner, and the cast members are already aware as early as last year, after the end of Season 5, that there is not going to be a Season 7 for “Rookie Blue.”
That is, in fact, the reason why the Season 6 story or main plotline of the TV series ended with its natural conclusion, reports Youth Health Mag.
While the ratings of the TV show remain fair, it seems that the producers and showrunner believe that they have taken the most out of the show and that it is best that they put a closure on the main plot and the subplots of the show so that fans would not felt shortchanged at all.
The beauty of knowing when to end
That is exactly the beauty of knowing in advance when the show is going to end. That is in stark contrast to a couple of other TV series which all left cliffhangers during their season finales this year only to be told later that their show will not be renewed for the following season.
That has been the case this year with “Constantine” on The CW, “The Following” on Fox, and lately, “Graceland” on the USA Network.
All those TV series left huge cliffhangers during their season finales, as the producers thought perhaps that their respective shows will be renewed by their respective network for the next season. Unfortunately, the networks decided otherwise, and as such, the three TV series all ended in an unfinished mode.
As a result, not only were fans disappointed, they also felt shortchanged because they were left with no answer to their burning questions about the plotline or plotlines of the TV show that they have religiously followed for some time.
Writings on the wall are obvious
In the case of “Rookie Blue,” when the show was officially cancelled last month, it no longer came as a surprise to the cast and crew members of the TV series, notes Enstarz.
It seems that they were pretty much expecting the non-renewal of the TV series after six seasons. The writings on the wall were pretty obvious even before the network made the announcement.
And it seems that fans were expecting that “Rookie Blue” will no longer be back for Season 7 as many of the questions were already answered and loose strings were also tied up. Best of all, show protagonists police officer Andy McNally, played by Missy Peregrym, got married with Detective Sam Swarek, played by Ben Bass.
Andy and Sam’s love story started way back in Season 1 so it is only fitting that during the Season 6 finale, they tied the knot. There is no better way to end a series than with a happy ending. So the showrunners and the cast members were already aware that “Rookie Blue” was only good for Season 6.
In fact, it is very likely that the cast members also know that the TV series was only good for six seasons only as early as last year, after the end of Season 5. After all, they have not done any filming for Season 6.
When the producers decided to split the 22 episodes of Season 5 into 11 episodes for the fifth season and the remaining 11 episodes for the next season, they are pretty much aware that there will be no renewal after Season 6.
