Google’s latest mobile operating system, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow, is already officially out and Android smartphone manufacturers all over the world are already preparing most of their handsets to get the updates soon.
So when reports came out that the Android 5.1 Lollipop update finally came to a smartphone from Chinese manufacturer Huawei, it did not come to some as hot news but rather as a belated occurrence.
Beginning on October 20, the US variant of the Huawei P8 Lite smartphone started receiving the Android 5.1 Lollipop update from its current Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.
According to Huawei, interested owners of P8 Lite can already download and install the Android 5.1 Lollipop. The Chinese handset maker added that it is also looking to receive feedbacks from its consumers so that they can improve on it, if ever, details Tech Times.
The catch
But there is a catch to the Android 5.1 Lollipop update on the Huawei P8 Lite. Apparently, it came as a manual one, as opposed to the usual OTA or over-the-air update. As such, once taken in by users, it will erase all existing data on the user’s device.
With this, Huawei tells all users of P8 Lite to back up their smartphone data to an SD card before they manually install the Android 5.1 Lollipop update.
The Chinese smartphone maker also advises users that they should ensure that their microSD card should have 4GB of free space because there will be two files needed to manually install the update.
The smaller file is the transfer package from Android 4.4 KitKat to Android 5.1 Lollipop and it needs to be installed first to lay the foundation of the update. After the Huawei P8 Lite reboots, the bigger file should be copied to the smartphone. The bigger file is the main build package.
After completing the two major processes, the complete ROM will flash and the user can manually complete the update from there.
Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Comes to Samsung’s Older Flagships
Meanwhile, the next update to Android 5.1 Lollipop, known as the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, has incidentally arrived a few days ago over-the-air to last year’s flagship smartphone and phablet of Samsung in Canada.
The update weighs 629MB in file size and is now available for download for the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 that are under Canadian carriers Virgin, Fido, SaskTel, Rogers, or Bell, cites Neurogadget.
Owners of the Samsung devices which do not automatically receive the update can always manually check it by going to their device’s settings.
The arrival of the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 4 is in preparation also for the coming of the Android 6.0 Marshmallow to the two devices sometime early next year.
Since Google announced the arrival of Android 6.0 Marshmallow sometime in May, it has been keenly noted that there has been a marked increase in the rate of over-the-air updates of the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to most Android devices.
While it is one of the last smartphone makers to have taken on the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, Sony was not the last to get the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and will certainly not bring up the rear in taking on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
Sometime at the end of July, the Sony Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 smartphones and other variants have gotten the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update.
Apparently, the firmware update came with improvements on the Xperia smartphones including new options in the notifications menu for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. In addition, the Settings menu also got refreshed icons as well as new animations.
In addition to the Xperia Z2 and the Xperia Z3, the Xperia Z2 Tablet and the Xperia Z3 Dual and Xperia Z3 Compact also took on the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update.
