For three seasons, “Graceland” managed to gather quite a large fan base and many people were enjoying the show, but apparently that was not enough – the ratings of the production seem to have been insufficient to warrant keeping it on air for another season, and even though people were hopeful to see a fourth set of episodes, it was recently announced that this is not going to happen. This is particularly disappointing to fans who were waiting to see Brandon Jay McLaren in a more regular role as he was supposed to become a recurring character.
The main issue with the show apparently boils down to viewer numbers, as they have been on a steady decline ever since the show went up on air in the beginning. The first season was relatively successful, but the second and third kept seeing lower and lower numbers until the show was considered at a risk of being cancelled. And while many fans were hopeful that this wouldn’t happen, they didn’t end up lucky after all.
The showrunners were still apparently happy with how things turned out though, especially towards the end of season 3 – according to them, this was the best season of the show, and the final episodes were especially well done and deserved all the attention they got. It seems like the producers were a bit disappointed that people had stopped following the production by that point, as they were particularly excited to show some interesting things on the screen for the finale of season 3.
Fans got to have a lot of fun with “Graceland” while it was still running, one way or another. It may be better that the show was cancelled in the end, as there were rumors that the producers were starting to run out of ideas and were considering revisiting some older ideas explored in season 1. That may have worked out fine, but it’s more likely that it would have backfired and caused an even greater drop in viewer numbers.
People want to see something fresh and new all the time, and a show that sticks to the same old formula is generally always at risk of cancellation. This is why some productions end up making drastic changes to their setups that aren’t taken so well by fans – it’s a required step for keeping the show alive, but it’s very hard to predict how fans are going to take the changes and if they are going to be received well.
Sometimes those changes end up turning people away from the show even more than they would have been if there was a lack of changes in the long run, so it’s not very easy to maintain the fine balance of a production that spans over multiple seasons. If the producers of “Graceland” really were having issues with coming up with new ideas for the show, maybe it really was better that the production was brought to an end.
On the other hand, there were also some rumors that season 4 would have been much more interesting than the ones before it, featuring some new ideas for the plot and characters. We could have seen the story jumping through time, as the show was about to move forward by several months and show how things could have progressed in the time that has passed since the finale of season 3. There were many implications in the way the last season ended, and it would have been interesting to see how the producers could have continued the story from there.
