There have been lots of active developments around “Super Smash Bros”, and the developers of the title have been putting a lot of effort into exploring its finer nuances and pushing it even further towards a competitive title. After all, it’s one of the games with the greatest potential on the market right now when it comes to competitive gameplay, but some of its ideas need a little more polish first.
Along with all the refinements of the main gameplay, the title has been getting lots of new content in the form of DLC, as the developers have been putting a lot of effort in expanding the range of features that it offers. Apart from new characters, DLC for the game also adds new stages from time to time – the most recent example is a stage straight out of “Super Mario Maker”, one that has spawned a lot of discussion within the community.
The announcement immediately sparked a lot of discussion within the community, as many people would obviously find it interesting to play on a stage like that. “Super Mario Maker” itself is a bit of an unusual game with some very wacky levels created by the community, and it would be interesting to see how a level from it could be carried over to “Super Smash Bros”.
The nature of the original game is the main reason for the huge excitement – players are expecting this level to be a more unique experience than other stages that have been released for the game previously, and it could end up being one of the more interesting stages in the long term.
There have been some minor rumors that the game might actually get an interesting level editor at some point, and even though those rumor have never been given too much attention, some players see this new level as a sort of confirmation. Of course, just because the game is getting a level from another game focused on editing levels doesn’t necessarily have to mean anything.
But we have already seen that the community of “Super Smash Bros” fans are among the more creative groups of gamers out there, and we don’t doubt that they will have some very cool ideas if they are given more control over their content. On the other hand, the business model of the title revolves to a large extent around the idea of selling DLC and that could go directly against this income channel.
But in the end, this is one of the games where the entertainment of players is prioritized over profits in development. That’s why it has managed to retain its status as one of the best competitive titles for so long, and why it has such a large fan base. We wouldn’t be surprised if something more unique really is coming up in the way of customization options. Something like that could actually be a boost to the title’s popularity on the competitive scene, so it could even make sense for the developers to consider that.
Either way, it would be interesting to see how the community adapts to the new stage, especially competitive players. The new gameplay concept introduced with that level looks like it could add a lot to the excitement that the game already offers. Of course, competitive players are also known for disliking certain gameplay features if they introduce an element of randomness, so the responses could realistically swing both ways. It could also become a favorite feature for those who want a more unpredictable match from time to time.
