‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ Storyline Gets a Lift from Disney XD’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Animated Series!

It looks like “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” shall no longer dwell so much on the back stories of the Guardians as the upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy” animated series on Disney XD will be the one doing just that.

The animated series will be premiering on September 26, but teasers have been coming out on Disney XD featuring origin story shorts focused on each of the Guardians, details Slash Film.

First off was the back story of Star Lord, as expected, being the leader of the Guardians, followed by Groot, Rockets, and Drax. And just a few days ago, it was Gamora’s back story which was highlighted in the teaser.

While the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” film shown last year already hinted of the stories of the Guardians in passing, the animated series will dwell on how the Guardians’ past and histories unfold and will also focus on the adventures together as a newly-formed team.

The biographies of the Guardians would certainly fast forward the plot of the highly-anticipated movie sequel which already has a playdate of May 5, 2017.

The good news is that Marvel is also uploading the origin story of the Guardians on YouTube, which would make it easier for viewers to follow the stories of the protagonists as they prepare for “Guardians of the Galaxy 2.”

Filling the gaps

It’s a good strategy on the part of both Disney and Marvel as Director James Gunn cannot simply put all the details of the story of the Guardians and come up with a complete and unique “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” movie in about two hours tops. At least the animated series would serve as the bridge between the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie shown in 2014 and the upcoming sequel to be released in cinemas on 2017.

The voice cast of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” animated series includes Will Friedle as Star Lord, Trevor Devall as Rocket Raccoon, Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot, Vanessa Marshall as Gamora, David Sobolov as Drax the Destroyer, and James Arnold Taylor as Yondu.

Screen Crush also believes that the animated series will fill the gaps that the Marvel cinematic universe may never get around to.

Animated series synopsis

According to its synopsis released by Disney XD, “Guardians of the Galaxy” animated series follows the newly-formed team who finds a strange artifact keyed only to the DNA of Peter Quill. Everyone knows that Peter Quill is Star Lord.

Upon opening the artifact, however, Quill unleashes a treasure map leading to a powerful weapon known as Cosmic Seed, which is capable of giving birth to the next universe.

It will then be up to the Guardians to find, protect, and ultimately destroy the Cosmic Seed in order to keep it out of the hands of those who would abuse its power, particularly from galactic big bad Thanos, to the conniving brothers the Collector and the Grandmaster, to a resurrected Ronan, and to the ultimate trickster Loki, in order to save the universe.

While details about the upcoming film are still sketchy, film director James Gunn has lived up to his name by firing some tidbits of information to keep the fans’ thirst for details about the upcoming film momentarily quenched.

He has been very accommodating and busy responding to fan queries about the movie and one of the most interesting response that a fan got from him is when he confirmed that there will be a new member or members of the Guardians in the upcoming sequel. As to how many exactly the new members of the Guardians will be, Gunn did not say.

Although the director has not yet disclosed the identity of the new member of the Guardians, there are rumors going around that it might be Moondragon, the daughter of Drax.

Drax believed that his daughter and wife were killed by Ronan the Accuser, but he will reportedly discover in the sequel that his daughter survived.

In addition to Moondragon, there have been speculations that the other possible new members of the Guardians may be Nebula and Yondu.

Nebula was an antagonist in the first movie, but it is possible that her grudge against her father may prompt her to join forces with the Guardians.
