Ever since it came out, “Destiny” has been one of the more controversial titles in the gaming industry. The phrase “either love it or hate it” applies very well to the situation with this game’s community, as on one hand it has a large number of strongly dedicated fans, but on the other, others see it as a poorly designed and frustrating game. And of course, this is accompanied by constant arguments online and various conflicts in the community itself.
And now, the upcoming release of “The Taken King”, an expansion for the game, has made the situation even more problematic. Players are now openly questioning whether “Destiny” might be becoming too easy and casual, while others are worried that the game is shifting away from its original focus. While both points have their merits, other players/critics have been more positive towards the new expansion and are waiting for it with a lot of excitement.
One of the main issues with the original game was the campaign, which many described as confusing and poorly designed, while others claimed outright that it was “nonsense”. And yet, multiplayer is obviously the main focus in this game, and it’s something that Bungie have managed to implement well. The studio has a strong reputation for that, after all, and it wasn’t really surprising to see them polishing this title to perfection.
There is some positivity towards the new expansion, with some critics claiming that it’s going to fix some of the main issues of the original game. First of all, it should improve the situation with the story to some extent, although we’re not sure if there’s any chance of making the storyline of the original game more accessible and sensible. At this point, it might be better to start from scratch if the developers want to keep adding more storyline-related content.
Another part of the original “Destiny” that drew some negative comments was the way its leveling was implemented. The game was trying to follow standard RPG mechanics for some time, but then introduced a completely new concept using a resource called “light” to upgrade weapons. Many players were turned off by this idea and claimed that it was confusing and made it feel like the player had less control over their progress through the game.
Looting should also be changed somewhat in “The Taken King”, although we don’t know if that will be a positive improvement or not. There’s only one way to find out – when the expansion comes out in September – but most players are apparently positively charged for the new additions to the looting system that will be introduced in the expansion.
More items to collect and a greater overall loot variety should offer players something more exciting to chase after, and this is apparently a feature that the game has been lacking for a long time. It’s true that some players seem to get detached from the experience very quickly with the original “Destiny”, but we’ll see how the release of the expansion will affect this.
Bungie have also been taking care of the game’s cheating problems, and they’re apparently planning some very harsh measures against them. However, the way the studio is handling the situation has been the subject of some controversy, as it was revealed that cheaters are not the only ones who might get caught up in the crossfire, but legitimate players might suffer as well.
