The Moto G’s new late-2015 edition has been somewhat controversial before the device hit the market, as some minor rumors prompted fans to worry that they’re going to get an underpowered device. However, the final result was not quite like that, and even though the new Moto G is not an Android powerhouse by any means, it’s also a quite capable device in general, and should work fine for most people’s needs.
Reviews have started to settle at this point and most people have formed opinions of the device, and the major verdict is overwhelmingly positive. The new phone comes with a better design both on the outside as well as inside, and it also offers water resistance and an overall more comfortable feel in the hand.
The camera has been improved a bit as well, although it’s nothing spectacular in the context of some other smartphone cameras right now. It should still be sufficient for random trips, parties and other events where the owner might need some quick photographic capabilities without going into too much detail.
On the other hand, the phone also has some minor downsides that might annoy some of its fans. In particular, it could have been given a more powerful processor, as reports indicate that the combination of processor + RAM is sometimes not enough for more advanced multitasking. As we said above, this is not a phone that’s supposed to be a highly powerful Android machine, but they could have at least given it an extra half gigabyte of RAM or something along those lines.
Reviewers have been very fond of the physical design of the phone. Most agree that it feels very well in the hand, and it actually manages to give off the impression of being a more expensive device than it is. Even though the phone is entirely made of plastic, it still doesn’t feel cheap and has a nice appearance to it. Some have even reported that the device feels nicer to the touch than other models in the G line, and Motorola seem to be paying specific attention to this aspect of the phone in its design.
The display isn’t bad either, and even though the resolution is nothing spectacular, the phone still offers a pretty good picture quality by modern standards and can easily captivate the eye. Combined with the recent improvements in Android that have made the operating system look better itself, this should be a nice selling feature for Android users who want something a bit more stylish and aimed at good multimedia capabilities.
A niche that’s covered by the new Moto G more or less perfectly, as long as the user doesn’t insist on multitasking as we described above. But for most intents and purposes, focusing on one single application should be enough for the average user, and we don’t expect many people to complain about poor multitasking if they’re primarily using their phones for Facebook, YouTube and other similar purposes.
Motorola have also offered several different color options for the phone – 10, to be precise – which just tops off the great design in a nice way, allowing users to be as stylish as they want with their new Moto G devices. There’s something for everyone in those color choices and even people with more pretentious tastes should be able to find a color that matches their style and personality. Customizing the phone is easy as well thanks to the swappable back cover.
