Development work on “Alien 5” has been speeding up, and lately we’re hearing some rumors that Neil Blomkamp has started putting more serious effort into “Alien 5”, taking over from Ridley Scott and adding his own personal flavor to the production. However, due to the potential similarity between “Alien 5” and “Prometheus 2”, the two directors have been collaborating to make sure that there are no overlaps between the two films and that they aren’t stepping on each other’s toes.
According to rumors, “Alien 5” was already in its preproduction stage since March, and it’s going to be a straight sequel to the original “Alien” by Ridley Scott, as well as its follow-up, “Aliens”. In addition, Sigourney Weaver is going to return as Ellen Ripley, although there might be some changes to the basic structure of the plot/cast. We don’t know if her character will be presented in the same way, as after all, a lot of time has passed since “Aliens”.
The last rumors we heard about the cooperation between Blomkamp and Scott stated that Blomkamp has been sending his ideas towards Scoot, who in turn goes over them and discusses potential changes with his fellow director. It sounds like this could be a lengthy process until they reach a point where both of them are happy with the structure they have for their films, but as long as it means that we’re going to get two unique, great productions, fans shouldn’t worry.
“Prometheus 2” is supposed to start filming next year, if the rumors are true. The film is apparently shaping up quite nicely and at this point, the only changes being made to the plot aren’t very minor as the production crew has been trying to wrap up all the details.
More specifically, filming is going to commence as early as January 2016, and it’s going to have a serious sci-fi note to it. Scott is attached to both projects and we’re expecting that Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace will be coming back in their original roles. In the meantime, Scott has been preparing for the launch of his next production, “The Martian”, which comes out later this year.
It seems like Ridley Scott is quite deeply involved in the whole sci-fi scene right now, and he doesn’t have any intention to stop soon. Which is certainly great, because the producer has shown that he can handle this genre with the kind of detailed touch that fans have come to love and even expect.
However, some fans have been worrying that “Prometheus 2” might see a sudden change in its direction and overall focus, which depends on how pleased Scott is going to be with how it comes out in the end. The director has a knack for introducing serious changes to productions that aren’t developing in the exact way that he wants, so fans have been hopeful that there won’t be any issues with the production of “Prometheus 2”, as that could mean significant alterations to the film.
But for the time being, it seems like most of the work for avoiding collisions between “Alien 5” and “Prometheus 2” is being done on the “Alien” front, and “Prometheus” isn’t being affected by those changes so much. We don’t know what’s really going on behind the scenes of course, but we have been getting some slight hints about the current state of production.
If Scott is already gearing up to start filming in a few months, then the script will likely not be changed much at this point. There might be some minor alterations here and there in order to push the story in certain directions more strongly, but the main plot elements must have been decided at this point.
