NBC might have cancelled the supernatural TV series “Constantine” based on DC Comics after one season, but the Hellblazer lead character might be resurrected in another show soon. Showrunners reveal that plans are now afoot on the possible return of Matt Ryan’s John Constantine character through a crossover in The CW’s hit TV series “Arrow.”
Talks of a possible crossover between the two shows have been circling even before the cancellation of “Constantine” was announced in May. Speaking to IGN during the recently-concluded ComicCon 2015, “Arrow” co-showrunner Wendy Mericle declares that they would really want to incorporate John Constantine’s storyline into the show’s upcoming fourth season. Mericle adds that it’s something they have been talking with DC Comics about it, but there are still some things to consider like logistics and scheduling. However, they are optimistic that it will all work out.
Originally, Green Arrow and Constantine never met in DC Comics, but if writers are looking in a singular direction, Constantine could be the entry point for The CW show to dive into its supernatural side since Ra’s Al Ghul’s appearance last season seemed to have established that aspect for the series.
Additionally, Constantine’s visit to Starling could be a great help for Team Arrow especially now that Damien Darhk will be the show’s main villain in the upcoming Season 4. The H.I.V.E leader and former member of the League of Assassins will be played by Neal McDonough who appeared in “Captain America: The First Avenger.”
Oliver Queen himself welcomes John Constantine dropping by Starling City soon. “Arrow” lead star Stephen Amell is very much open to opportunities for an interconnectivity with any DC television show that exists. During ComicCon 2015, the 34-year-old actor admits that he is sad that “Constantine” was cancelled because it was a good show. But there are a lot of platforms where “Constantine’s” story can come alive again, hinting that the possibility of the demon hunter meeting the green hooded vigilante is pretty much going to happen.
During the series finale of “Arrow” Season 3, Oliver Queen bid goodbye to his Arrow crusade and drove off the sunset with Felicity Smoak. In the upcoming fourth season, Oliver realizes that he cannot just leave behind what he’s called for, to save his city. Although he won’t be returning as the Arrow as confirmed by Amell himself, it only makes speculations true that when the vigilante returns to his hero status, he will be branded as the Green Arrow. Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim recently confirmed through his Twitter account the production for Season 4 has already begun on July 23.
According to iDigital Times, now that “Constantine” is cancelled, it only makes it more feasible that Ryan’s character may drop by “Arrow” this season. This would make more sense because the infamous League of Assassins, now spearheaded by Malcolm Merlyn, still holds a strong presence in “Arrow.”
Thea’s resurrection from the Lazarus pit last season would also be explored more in the upcoming season and that seems like a great way for Constantine’s entrance. Also, now that Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer is officially out of Starling City, segueing to his own show, “A.T.O.M,” it would really be a great time for producers to hire Ryan for a guest star appearance when the show comes back on October 7.
Before it was axed, the main plot of the NBC show focused on John Constantine, a demon hunter and occult master who was on a mission to protect mankind from the perils of supernatural threats due to the rising darkness, all while struggling with his dark past.
Although the series only ran for 13 episodes from October 2014 to February this year, it developed a good fan-base. Many fans were disappointed that the show wasn’t renewed anymore and most of them were annoyed because the show ended its run with a cliffhanger that can never be resolved.
