In an age where CGI is starting to become more and more prominent in cinema, to the point where we’re already seeing films that have been entirely developed and produced digitally, some directors still insist to use a more classical approach to the special effects in their own films. They all have their different reasons for it, but it’s certainly true that many fans of cinema tend to appreciate this personal touch to the films that they watch as well.
Recently, Tom Cruise talked a little about the possibility of coming back to play in “Top Gun 2”, the sequel to the incredibly popular sky action film which is currently being produced by Paramount and Skydance. According to the actor, he would gladly return, as long as he gets the opportunity to fly in a good old jet – not in a computer-generated one.
“I’m saying right now no CGI on the jets”, he sharply added – finishing off with the remark that the studio might have a thing or two to say to the Department of Defense if they wanted to use actual jets in the production of the film. Of course, if they did decide to go for real machines, they should have no problem overcoming whatever legal obstacles there are.
Justin Marks, who worked on the script for “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li”, has reportedly been hired to contribute to the script of the new “Top Gun” as well. Needless to say, official details on the new production are rather scarce, but so far we’ve heard that the film will be largely about modern technology such as drones, and how it has impacted fighter pilots.
Those old-school “aces” now have to adapt to a situation where dogfighting is basically nonexistent, and this has significantly reshaped the combat landscape. For good or bad, we’re about to find out in “Top Gun 2” once the film is ready.
David Ellison himself has stated that the new “Top Gun” has an excellent part planned for Tom Cruise, as he realizes the huge significance of his character to the production. After all, he remarked, “There is no Top Gun without Maverick”. Most fans would probably immediately agree to that as well, so hopefully, whatever Tom Cruise’s specific requirements for the new “Top Gun” are (other than no CGI jets), he’ll see them met and we’ll see the actor on the screen once again.
It would also be interesting to see Cruise specifically performing in the new film since the actor is so fond of doing his own stunts in general, and he’s been known to swing off buildings, leap off skyscrapers and more – and now, he’ll have a good opportunity to get plenty of air time thanks to “Top Gun 2”.
It’s been quite a while since the original film came out, and a lot will have likely changed in the plot structure of “Top Gun 2”. It might be hard to swallow for some fans, but it’s been nearly three decades, and there might be some difficulties in getting everyone from the original crew on board. Still, Tom Cruise should more than make up for anyone else that might be missing, as long as he gives the role all he’s got. And we know that the actor is particularly fond of “Top Gun” too, so we can definitely imagine him delivering a stellar performance. However long it takes, it will be worth for all fans of the original.
