If General Hospital sounds familiar to you, then it might be because the soap opera has been on television for many, many years. In fact, it is one of the longest running soap operas of all time. The daytime television show started way back in 1963 with thirty-minute episodes that kept the audience at the edge of their seats. In 1976, the show moved to a 45-minute format and ultimately moved to a 60-minute format just a couple years later.
The show can be watched on ABC during the day if you have the time, just like more than 17 million other households that tune into each episode. The 13,000th episode was aired early last year and marked it as the longest running television soap opera of all time, enjoying the 50th year on televisions all over the world back in 2013. This week, news has been hitting the internet that the show is going to be saying goodbye to a cast member that has been with the show for more than 37 years.
That cast member first arrived on the set back in the late 1970’s on a 13-week job in the fictional city of Port Charles. That actor was Anthony Geary and he was known as Luke Spencer for all of those 37 years on General Hospital. Looking back, Geary said that he jumped right into the part and never looked back. Over those 37 years, Geary won eight Emmys as well and that is usually a sign of a great career in television.
To some, the Emmys are just a bonus that came along with some great story lines in the show. Some of the most notable included “Laura’s Wedding” back in 1981. That one hour episode is still one of the most watched in soap opera history with more than 30 million viewers at the time. Geary is not just going to step aside and do nothing the rest of this life. In fact, he began a music career about 51 years ago and has been working with a vocal coach again recently. The actor recently said in an interview that he does have a “bucket list” and that includes the West End of London.
He also plans to spend some of this time writing, figuring his memoirs of his time on the show would be just as good of a read as the show was to watch. Geary’s last episode is going to air on July 27th on ABC if you care to watch the show say goodbye to one of America’s most recognizable soap opera characters. In the meantime, General Hospital has been getting better ratings and just seems to be steaming along in the daytime television bracket.
I am going to miss Tony so much
I’m gonna miss Tony Geary N Luke Spencer :)
