Actress Abigail Spencer of the current Sundance TV drama series “Rectify” and the highly acclaimed crime drama TV series “True Detective” on HBO revealed her passion for travel in an interview on July 14.
In her interview with Chicago Tribune, Abigail said that her love for travelling started at a young age since she travels with family and friends a lot. For her, travel is the means to know what other people have in their minds and at the same time, be able to understand what they like and know the problems they are currently facing.
As a child, her first trip outside of the United States was at Grand Cayman when she was 13 years old. Her brothers and even her father love to travel and they surf around the world. Thus, at the age of 17, she travelled more outside the country.
However, her life-changing experience happened when she was 15. At that time, she travelled and stayed in Germany for a month together with an acapella choir group. During the day time, they are teaching the culture of America to kids in school and that exchange of cultures became valuable to her. Through the experience, she was able to speak some German words and phrases.
Although Spencer originally came from Gulf Breeze, Florida, she grew up in Costa Rica. She had friends there who took her to a place named “The Sanctuary at Two Rivers.” The area is known for being one of the few retreat centers in the world that was specifically built and designed by yoga instructors.
Moreover, according to the yoga retreat center’s website, the facility’s main goal is to create a first-class retreat center for those who want to take yoga retreat vacations. People can be one with nature in the center. They can also detox, meditate, contemplate, practice yoga and become balanced by going through a wellness and health program.
Spencer did not just practice yoga, but she was able to do her favorite sport, surfing. The adventurous part of the trip was that only a small plane can drop the passengers off the jungle while a jeep will pick the visitors for a two-hour drive until they reach the river. From there, the visitors need to walk a mile to be able to reach the yoga retreat center.
According to Spencer, her first trip to the site was memorable as she travelled with six friends during a full moon and they just ate delicious vegetarian food for the whole week. The location is one of Spencer’s favorites since it provides amazing views of both the jungle and the ocean. Thus, she decided to bring her boyfriend when she came back to the place within the same year.
The “Rectify” actress revealed that her favorite vacation destination was Nicaragua. She travelled there with her boyfriend where they stayed in a small boutique hotel that can only accommodate around 12 persons. What she liked about the place is that it provides inexpensive but delicious food. She also said the weather in the area was perfect because it is not too dry nor humid. With that kind of weather, they freely hiked and surfed so the travel was full of adventure.
Although she thinks the place was too far, but the long travel is all worth it once the tourists arrive. She said she does not want to leave after they saw the area.
For her future travel plans, Spencer wants to visit “undiscovered places.” She is also interested to visit Australia, Bali, and New Zealand since she heard amazing things about those places. She is hoping that she can do a “Rectify” tour in Australia as the show is currently being aired in that country. It would be her perfect opportunity to visit her dad and brothers’ favorite surfing place.
