2016 Chevrolet Camaro High Performance Variants Coming Out Soon

American car manufacturer, General Motors officially unveiled the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro in May at Detroit, Michigan. A month later, GM launched the European model of the latest iteration of the Camaro featuring two engine variants.

Early this month, spy shots of a camouflaged high-performance variant of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro were snapped at while the vehicle is undergoing test runs in Detroit and its surrounding areas, reports the GM Authority.

From the shape and silhouette of the vehicle, there is no denying that it is clearly a Camaro. However, what takes the cake to indicate that it is a high-performance variant of the latest model of the power sedan are the larger and meatier tires that the camouflaged test vehicle were sporting.

Even the rear portion of the vehicle indicates that there is slight variation from the other Camaro prototypes that were recently displayed in recent international auto shows.

The site believes that the camouflaged vehicle is likely to be the next Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. It has the trimmings and the power to give the Hellcat a true challenge. It is also possible that an LT4 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine would be a nice fit for the next Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, to follow the footsteps of its acknowledged big brother, the Corvette, which comes in both the LT1 and the LT4 engines.

While there is still no detail as to when the high-performance Camaro will roll out in the market, but considering the usual timeline of GM in releasing its latest models, it is likely that the vehicle will hit the market in 2018.

Two different high-performance Camaros?

Meanwhile, the Day Herald reported that a pre-production model of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro was recently caught on camera in a parking lot in Detroit.

The snapshot has given motorists a perspective of the enhanced look at the so-called evolutionary design of the Camaro SS, which looks quite aggressive, accentuated by its stylish and robust design.

The vehicle is said to be powered by a V8 6.2-liter engine capable of exuding 339 kW of maximum power and 455 pound-feet of maximum torque, which shall complement its standard six-speed manual gearbox and optional eight-speed paddle-shift automatic.

The Camaro SS is a more powerful variant of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro and it could be that the camouflaged vehicle spotted also in Detroit by the GM Authority and identified as the Camaro ZL1 is the same as the one reportedly seen in the parking lot in Detroit. After all, it would be ironic and absurd for GM to test run two high-performance Camaro models at about the same time.

The Day Herald did mention in its report that the Camaro SS will be using an LT1 6.2-liter V8 engine which was previously available only on the Camaro ZL1, but will now come to the Camaro SS too.

Convertible edition

Meanwhile, GM has also unveiled in the US the convertible edition of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, the only car in its class to offer an advanced functioning, fully automatic, locking, and electro-hydraulic soft-top.

The good thing about the 2016 Camaro’s convertible roofing is that the driver can actually remotely close the roof even when driving at speeds of up to 48 kilometers per hour using the car’s electronic key fob.

And when it is an open-top, the roof will fold completely beneath the car’s beltline under a hard cover that hides the canvas when fully-folded. Despite having a canvas roofing, it will still have better soundproofing inside the cabin thus reducing road and wind noise because it will be using multilayer fabric. When the roof is back on, the top actually creates a roofline that faithfully resembles the shape of the hardtop coupe version of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro.
