The series finale of Season 3 of the American thriller drama TV series “The Following” offered plenty of cliffhangers, which means producers Warner Bros Television were not expecting that it would be cancelled.
But apparently, just weeks after its May 18 final episode for Season 3, Fox decided to cancel the show and shut down hopes for a Season 4 next year. That certainly caught Warner Bros Television by surprise because it would not have agreed with a hanging finale as carried out by the show creator had it known that Season 3 would be its last.
The producers would have told the show creator that Season 3 should put a wrap on every burning question and issue so that fans and viewers would feel that there is a closure.
But that is not the case for “The Following” as Season 3 left a lot of unanswered questions, making fans feeling short-changed. It’s no different to going to a theater to watch a movie and just when it came to the point of its climax, the moviegoer steps out of the moviehouse and goes home for good.
It is for that reason that Warner Bros Television started lobbying hard to other networks and streaming services to rescue Season 4 of “The Following” from cancellation. The producers were determined to find another home for the show, which was cancelled by Fox due to its low ratings.
Initially, there were talks that Warner Bros Television was talking to Hulu to save the show just like it did recently with Season 5 of the comedy medical drama TV series “The Mindy Project.” But Hulu can only do so with one series for the year so it turned down Warner Bros Television offer.
That left the producers with only Netflix to deal with as far as online streaming service route to possibly rescue Season 4 of “The Following.”
While hopes are high that Netflix will take in the show and be its home for the next season in 2016, the streaming service has yet to make an announcement to either confirm or deny reports that it is considering of saving “The Following” from cancellation.
No one is safe
The spectre of the show being completely over is also heightened by the fact that even the cast members of the TV series have bid their farewells to the show’s fans on their respective social media accounts. Just like the favorite line in the series ‘No one is safe,’ it seems that it now applies to the series as well.
Show lead star Kevin Bacon, who plays the role of former FBI Agent Ryan Hardy in the series, has also hinted that Fox would not be renewing the show for a fourth season because 10 days before the series finale, he tweeted on social media giving his big love to the loyal fans of “The Following.”
His post on Twitter said the he finds it an honor to work for the fans and that the sweat, tears and lots of blood seemed to have been worth it. He also told fans that they should enjoy the remaining two episode of the show.
The same is true with the other cast members of “The Following” who used their respective social media accounts to express their gratitude to fans for supporting the show during its past three seasons, notes Venture Capital Post.
Last resort
If things worked out well on the supposed ongoing negotiations between Warner Bros Television and Netflix, Season 4 of the show might get picked up by the popular streaming service soon and possibly aired early next year.

Wtf man? People just don’t have an affinity for dark t.v series like I do…. I mean come on! American horror story, the following I love this stuff. Of course when I talk to gma about our shows we love, I have to explain it’s far too dark for her taste but I really enjoy the mystery and the creepiness. That’s just me, I guess
Please Netflix bring this show back. I love this show! It is one of the best shows on TV now. You can’t find anything but reality TV nowadays I am sick of it I love this series. Awesome show and I absolutely love Kevin Bacon
Why is it every time a really good show comes on after a couple of seasons someone wants to cancel it. I had been looking forward to it coming back on when I found out it’s not. May just start only watching movies since after a few seasons my favorite shows are canceled.
This is so DUMB the following is by far the best tv show ever . Why cancel this and not all the other pointless TV shows . I really hope it comes back on because I was looking forward to see what Ryan has up his sleeve. The finale kept my mind wondering so if you’re gonna end the show end it without leaving viewers mind lost
