There has been a lot of speculation about Michael Bay’s involvement in the upcoming “Transformers 5”, with many fans of the franchise convinced that the director isn’t coming back for this installment. However, Mark Wahlberg has recently expressed his hopes that he’ll see Michael Bay returning, and in fact he seems confident that this is going to happen.
Wahlberg was talking about his next project with Collider, discussing how Akiva Goldsman and the rest of the team have been hard at work on the script for “Transformers 5”. People on the team include Robert Kirman, Art Marcum, Jeff Pinker and more. They have been going through various ideas for the next installment in the franchise and have been brainstorming various possible developments, but all of this doesn’t really answer the question about Michael Bay.
According to Wahlberg, this might actually depend on the “strength of the script”. He is apparently confident that the director would be interested in coming back to work on the film if it has a good enough script attached to it, and so far there has been no official confirmation about who will be directing the new production in the first place.
Bay has reportedly been busy filming “13 Hours” in Malta, a movie about a Special Forces operation in response to the death of an US ambassador in Libya. Wahlberg has been filming “Deepwater Horizon” in New Orleans, meanwhile, a production based on the April 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The film is currently expected to come out next year, arriving at theaters on September 30 2016.
It seems that Wahlberg is currently waiting for Michael Bay to return from Malta so that the two of them can commence their work on “Transformers 5”, and by then the writers should be done with their work on the script, giving Bay something to look at.
Hopefully, the script will be good enough to satisfy the director’s requirements and make it into production – after all, it’s no secret that Michael Bay can be quite strict about his work, and the director rarely makes compromises with the quality of his films. If he doesn’t like what he sees in the script for “Transformers 5”, there will likely be no convincing him to change his mind.
Which would certainly be sad, but in the end it’s more important that Michael Bay works on this film with an actual desire to do it, rather than out of a sense for duty to his fans. It’s true that many people would enjoy seeing him return right now, but if it’s done in a poorly thought-out way, it should probably not happen at all.
