Fox Alters Comic Book Origin Story of ‘Fantastic Four’ Movie Reboot

The latest trailer of the “Fantastic Four” reboot movie from Fox had fans talking about the upcoming superhero film that is due to hit theaters on August 7.

It is obvious from the movie’s cast of characters that Fox made some changes on the origin story of the four superheroes based on the Marvel comic books.

The most glaring difference is the fact that in the comic books, Susan Storm, who is the Invisible Woman, and Johnny Storm, who is the Human Tourch, are siblings. It was highlighted during the first two “Fantastic Four” movies when the roles were played by Jessica Alba and Chris Evans, respectively.

In the movie reboot, the role of Sue Storm has been taken on by Kate Mara while Johnny Storm is now being played by Michael B. Jordan. It is obvious that they cannot be siblings since Kate is Caucasian while Michael is black.

Accordingly, they will not be biological siblings in the movie reboot just like in the comic books but Sue Storm is an adopted child of Dr. Franklin Storm, played by Reg E. Cathey. Michael and Reg are both black, notes Comicbook.com.

Another difference

How the four superheroes got their powers was also altered in the “Fantastic Four” movie reboot. In both the comics and the first “Fantastic Four” film, the four got their superpowers after a trip to outer space exposes them to cosmic radiation.

However, in the movie reboot, the four gets into an alternate dimension, which is likely to be referred to as the Negative Zone and the exposure to the other world transforms them into supernatural humans with superpowers.

Unlike in the Marvel comic books and the first “Fantastic Four” film where Dr. Doom is Victor Von Doom, in the movie reboot, he is Victor Domashev, played by Toby Kebbell, and he also got his superpower because he joined the four in their crossover to the Negative Zone.

But unfortunately for him, he got left behind in the alternate dimension so when he got back, his first order of business was to unleash his vengeful acts on the Fantastic Four. In the trailer, it showed that Reed and Victor are actually college friends and they were responsible for opening the door to the Negative Zone.

Fantastic powers

The four superheroes shall have upgraded powers compared to their counterparts in the first “Fantastic Four” movie shown in 2005.

fantastic four

Reed Richards can warp the space around him and appear to stretch his body into impossible forms and incredible lengths. In the previous “Fantastic Four” movies, Richards can only stretch his body as the failed experiment made him and his body very elastic.

    1. It’s based on the Ultimate Fantastic Four, they’re not altering the origin story. And Sue and Johnny are still siblings, albeit this time they’re adopted.

  1. Let’s just boycott the movie and be done with it! That’ll teach Fox a lesson! (I still cannot get over the whole Peter Parker’s father being responsible for him turning into Spider-Man…)

  2. “It is obvious that they cannot be siblings since Kate is Caucasian while Michael is black” Really?? And we wonder why Micheal B Jordan gets so much bs for is role as Johnny. Open your mind people.

    1. Though there not from the same parents but statements like this doesnt make it better. How about just going into. This time around Sue ios adopted and Johnny is her brother. Point blank period.
