“Modern Family” is still going strong in its sixth season, and the show’s writing remains top notch and highly satisfying to its fans, according to everyone following it actively.
In episode 20, we got to see a peculiar situation involving Jay, as he agreed to play as a substitute in the bowling league of Cam. However, when he gets to the event, he discovers a small, but highly important detail – he must apparently pretend that he’s gay if he wants to take part in the actual tournament.
Jay is a character that the writers love to put in strange situations, constantly pushing him out of his comfort zone, and this has been received very well by fans and critics as a whole, with many commenting that his character is central to the success of the show.
Jay himself has been getting more and more open-minded, and he’s started to accept certain things in his life much more easily.
And while he’s always had some reservations towards Cam and Mitch, this recent episode might finally help him drop all of that and see them for who they really are. It’s also worth noting that the world of Cam and Mitch is pretty much the most upsetting thing for Jay, as it’s the kind of environment that truly triggers his awkward responses.
Things start out easy enough for Jay, who’s told to just “be himself” if he wants to fool everyone, but that quickly proves to be insufficient, as he has to start acting more and more actively on his gay side in order to be truly convincing. Martin, a rival for the team, starts to question whether or not Jay is truly gay, which prompts him to act more seriously and start throwing in various phrases that obviously make him seem uncomfortable at first.
However, he is apparently enjoying the whole situation and manages to have fun with it all, and later he even finds a way to use the situation to his advantage. He goes up

to Martin and asks him about his opinion on the card photo he took for Costco. He then helps the team win the trophy, but in the end he sees Martin looking disappointed. He realizes it’s not so much because of the game, but because Jay turned him down for a date.
He then decides to admit that he’s not actually gay, in a move that was not received very positively by all fans of the show. A side plot of the episode shows Gloria and Mitch deciding to go out clubbing together with Haley, but they end up being a little in over their heads once they realize what exactly they’re getting into.
