LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition Gets the Sweeter Taste of the Android 5.1 Lollipop

While all eyes were on the Nexus and the Motorola devices as far as the roll out of the Android 5.1 Lollipop is concerned, the firmware update has quietly seeded into the LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition starting on April 5.

The more than 200 MB mobile operating system update has started coming to the LG G Pad 8.3 GPE tablet over-the-air or OTA, reports GSM Arena.

Android 5.1 Lollipop will be coming to the tablet in batches so those who own a GPE version of the LG G Pad 8.3 need to regularly check the settings of their respective tablets to see if it is already available for downloading.

The firmware updates on tablets

The LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition is the third tablet to have taken on the Android 5.1 Lollipop after only the Nexus 9 and the Nexus 10 devices.

Since the Android 5.1 Lollipop rolled out to the Nexus tablets beginning on March 9, majority of the users have recognized that it has indeed solved the bugs, problems and other issues that came with the Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The same experience are also being felt by users of Motorola devices in which Android 5.1 Lollipop has already seeded into.

However, the Nexus 5, which received the Android 5.1 Lollipop first overall, seems to be having memory leak problems after the firmware update. Accordingly, the problem happens when apps running in the background eat up as much as 100 MB of RAM, which eventually leads to the system consuming up to 1GB of RAM, causing the OS to crash.

More improvements

Overall however, the Android 5.1 Lollipop is a lot better than the Android 5.0 Lollipop. In addition to bug fixes, stability improvements, and performance tweaks, it also came with major improvements. It also brings about a more stringent security for the device.

The obviously faster boot time of the firmware update is one of the most prominent improvements of the Android 5.1 Lollipop. There is also the Device Protection feature, which enables users to secure their devices against theft and unauthorized use by locking the device unless the original user’s Google account is opened. The good thing about this feature is that it cannot be removed even if the device is reset.

The firmware update has also enabled users to access quick settings from the lock screen. They can also toggle their Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, as well as other settings via the lock screen. There is also the HD voice calling but is limited to devices that are compatible with the technology which at the moment is only featured with the Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9.

Android 5.1 Lollipop also gives users of LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition the ability to control paired Bluetooth devices from Quick Settings. Users can also join Wi-Fi networks in the same manner.
