The second installment to the ‘Avengers’ Marvel movie franchise officially titled “Avengers: Age of Ultron” will be hitting theaters worldwide on May 1.
Scarlett Johansson, the only rose among the thorns in the Avengers, will reprise his role for the fourth time in the upcoming ‘Avengers’ sequel. She has previously played the role in “Iron Man 2,” the “Avengers,” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
In taking in the role of Black Widow for the fourth time, Scarlett Johansson says she only wants to stay true to her character. She says that she wanted to be consistent with the character’s arc and its evolution should also be cohesive, notes the Philippine Star.
Johansson believes that it is important that the character grows in her rather than be content on staying the same. She wants to see the transformation of the character every movie and thus far, she seems happy with the way how she was able to put more life into that thrust for Black Widow.
Different directors, same role
Johansson has had three different directors in four movies that she took on the role of Black Widow, with Director Joss Whedon twice.
Whedon directed her as Black Widow in the “Avengers” and also in the upcoming “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Scarlett says that it was Whedon who empowered her to explore her character as Natasha Romanoff, the alter ego of Black Widow.
She recalled that during her first meeting with writer and director Joss Whedon, they talked about the background of Natasha and her sordid past. She decided that she wants Natasha to take on the role of playing in the middle like the color gray instead of the pure white or pure black.
The actress also finds the character of Natasha Romanoff exciting and compelling because she’s not exactly righteous. She said that Black Widow was part of S.H.I.E.L.D. because that is where she belonged even though it was not necessarily the place for her to be.
She added that in the “Avengers,” the mode is also changing so she had to make sure that she keeps up with the change while maintaining the distinct quality of the character which she started quite well with “The Avengers.”
Age of Ultron plot
In the “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the team of Marvel superheroes are up against an artificial intelligence nemesis known as Ultron, which threatens humanity, but originally meant to help the Avengers protect them.
Johansson says that Ultron is everyone and everywhere. She says that the villain, to be voiced by veteran actor James Spader, is like a sort of Big Brother in a way, but the evil kind that is. She said that Ultron is much greater and powerful than the Avengers combined but eventually, they realized that it was just a perception but it really feels at first that the villain is indestructible.
Although its global premiere is on May 1, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” will be hitting Philippine cinemas 10 days ahead of the rest of the world as the movie will be released on April 22.
