One of the most recent rumors about “GTA 6” – a game that exists practically entirely in the form of rumors right now – claims that the game is going to be set in a real-life location, and Rockstar are actively trying to decide what they should do about its location. So far, we’ve heard numerous rumors about the game’s setting, and this is just another one at this point. However, it’s worth noting that among the previous rumors, we’ve heard several real-life town names such as New York and Chicago, so it’s entirely possible that this latest rumor could be a bit more credible.
London is one of the most recently rumored settings for “GTA 6”, and this rumor has actually come from multiple sources. There has already been a “GTA” game set in London before, and it was in fact one of the very first entries into the series, which could mean that “GTA 6” could be a throwback to the older days of the franchise.
If that’s true, fans shouldn’t get their hopes up for any crossovers between the storylines though – the previous London-based “GTA” game was set a bit far back into the past, so unless “GTA 6” also has a more retro style (unlikely), then we likely won’t see any overlap between the two games.
On the other hand, Rockstar could choose to at least make some subtle references to “GTA: London” in the new title if it really is based there. And as far as the studio goes, the only thing they’re willing to say publicly, according to reports, is that they treat the game’s location as a very important factor, and are going to put serious effort into getting it right, because they realize how important it will be for the overall success of the game.
What could the implications of a real-life “GTA” be though? A lot has changed since the last time we got a “GTA” game with such a setting, and the political climate surrounding video games is a bit trickier at this point. “GTA” is already one of the most notorious game series when it comes to accusations of violence and other similar problems, so placing the game in a real-world location could make it a very easy target for people who like to attack video games for their violent contents.
On the other hand, Rockstar are one of the last companies to be bothered by political correctness in their development, and if anyone is prepared to push boundaries without caring for the repercussions, it’s them. Hopefully if they do decide to place “GTA 6” in a realistic location, they’ll handle the press appropriately.
