Two weeks ago, Marvel was reportedly choosing who the alter ego of its version of the Spider-Man between Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
Everyone already knows who Peter Parker is. Miles Morales, on the other hand, is the new alter-ego of Spider-Man in its comic books following the death of Peter Parker. The character first appeared in “Ultimate Fallout #4” published in 2011.
But unlike Peter Parker who is a Caucasian, Miles Morales is of Black Hispanic descent and the creative people at Marvel Comics actually drew inspiration from both US President Barrack Obama and American actor Donald Glover to define the features of the new Spider-Man alter-ego.
The choice has been made
However, latest word from Joe Quesada, chief creative officer of Marvel Studios, confirmed that the Spider-Man who shall be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe for “Avengers: Infinity War” in 2016 and the solo movie for the web-slinging superhero in 2017, shall have Peter Parker as the alter ego.
Quesada said that the best way to make Marvel’s version of the Spider-Man is anchored on who shall play the role of Peter Parker. He said that the trick to making any reincarnation of Spider-Man great, whether comics, animation or film, is no other than Peter Parker.
He said that it is important for them to get the perfect actor to play Spider-Man since getting Peter Parker right, the rest of the movie falls into place.
Since the late 70s, there have been three actors who have played the part of Peter Parker in the movies.
Tobey Maguire played the role of Peter Parker in the three “Spider-Man” movies shown from 2002 to 2007 before Andrew Garfield took over the role when Sony rebooted the franchise and appeared in two “The Amazing Spider-Man” films released in 2012 and 2014. Nicholas Hammond also played Peter Parker in the 1977 Spider-Man film.
In the running for the role
Immediately following the announcement of the deal between Marvel and Sony Pictures last month, reports came out that Dylan O’ Brien of “The Maze Runner” and Logan Lerman of “Fury” were the initial frontrunners to land the Peter Parker role.
Subsequent reports however, indicate that Freddie Highmore of “Bates Motel” TV series is also auditioning for the role of Peter Parker and Spider-Man in the next iteration of the wall-crawling Marvel superhero.
In a recent interview, Highmore said that his advantage is the fact that he plays Norman Bates in the “Bates Motel” TV series and he sees a lot of similarities between Norman and Peter Parker so he could easily adapt to the role.
He also said that it would really be fantastic if he is considered and given the opportunity to play the role. Highmore added that Peter Parker is the kind of guy at school who is not part of the cool group but his extreme intelligence and his being Spider-Man gave him the confidence to face the challenges of life.
