The Apple Watch and the new Apple MacBook launching on March 9 also came with the launching of the iOS 8.2, the firmware update to the highly-touted but problematic iOS 8.0 mobile operating system that was launched in September last year along with the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.
It’s no wonder that Google also launched the Android 5.1 Lollipop on a number of Nexus devices on the same day that the American tech giant officially rolled out the iOS 8.2.
After its launching in September last year, the iOS 8.0 mobile operating system has been beset by bugs, optimization woes, and performance issues that had Apple launching at least six other releases including one firmware update (the iOS 8.1) and five patches, including the iOS 8.0.1, the iOS 8.0.2, the iOS 8.1.1, the iOS 8.1.2, and the iOS 8.1.3.
Despite all these releases from September last year up to February this year, Apple’s mobile operating system was still having fits in terms of optimization and performance, with some more bugs still thriving.
More focused
Having had enough of all the issues and problems that have hounded the iOS 8.x releases, Apple finally came up with its second major firmware update, the more focused iOS 8.2.
The latest major update to Apple’s mobile operating system is full of bug fixes and also comes with optimizations to solve all flaws in the OS that have practically made the lives of Apple mobile users a misery, particularly those using the early versions of the iPhones, iPads, iPad minis, and iPod touches, cites Forbes.
While the iOS 8.2 was launched on March 9 by Apple during its “Spring Forward” event to highlight the OS’s ability to interface with the Apple Watch, it was only on March 13 that the over-the-air updates started rolling out to the Apple mobile devices.
In addition to solving bugs, and optimization problems, the iOS 8.2 also addresses stability issues that have made its way to the iOS 8 upon its launching in September last year.
Persistent problem
While the iOS 8.2 has nearly written off all the bugs in the latest Apple mobile OS, it has not been able to solve the major problem that Apple mobile devices are encountering – the high battery drain when the device is connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Despite its claim as a more focused firmware update, the infamous bug that causes a heavily degraded and sometimes intermittent wireless performance has not been solved by the iOS 8.2.
Apple users refer to this bug as WiFried and it seems to be hitting all iPhones, iPads, iPad minis, and iPod touches similarly. Apart from not being able to continuously be connected to a wireless network, WiFried can really result to severe battery drain.
There have been reports that Apple mobile devices, when affected by the WiFriend, lasts only four to six hours on full charge.
The iOS 8.2 is the seventh OS update release from Apple since September last year. With a major bug diminishing its gains, Apple is said to be already working on the iOS 8.3. The company is reportedly testing the next firmware update so maybe Apple would get it right on the eighth try.
