According to OnePlus, they’re aiming for Q2/Q3 2015 for the release of the upcoming OnePlus Two, although the company couldn’t say when exactly the device will be ready for the market. It seems like they’re trying to give some direct competition to Samsung with their S5, as well as the HTC One M8 and Google Nexus 5.
The original OnePlus One was a pretty successful device, making the headlines for its great performance and affordable price, while it was also marketed in a somewhat peculiar way, with exclusivity playing into its popularity to a large extent.
So far, we’ve seen some reports and rumors that the next phone will feature a significant redesign compared to its predecessor. The company is calling it “Lettuce” internally, after they named the original OnePlus One the “Bacon”. There doesn’t seem to be a specific naming pattern so far, other than the fact that both names are foods. Google, for example, like to name each major release of their Android operating system after some type of candy.
What exactly will the major changes be? We’re not sure yet – in fact, the device’s specifications remain unknown in official terms. It’s not hard to find plenty of rumors on that topic if one looks around though, but which of those rumors are pointing in the right direction and which ones should be ignored is a little hard to tell at the moment.
The device is expected to at least have better LTE support than the previous OnePlus phone, as well as obviously more up-to-date hardware. In addition, it’s speculated that the new phone will ship with the latest version of Android right out of the box, although knowing the kinds of changes that were made to the original OS of the OnePlus One, that claim could be questioned a little bit.
It would also be curious to see how far Android would have gotten by the time the phone is ready for the market, as a lot can happen by Q2/Q3 2015. The operating system has been enjoying a very active development lately, and there could even be another major milestone by that time. What could that mean for the OnePlus Two? If its developers manage to get the newest Android version converted to their own specifications in time, that could certainly give the new phone a very successful launch. It would also be a great claim for their marketing, so they would probably not want to miss out on this opportunity, and will put some effort into getting the newest version of Android up and running on the OnePlus Two before the device arrives to the market.
