Let’s face it! Android-powered smartphones are getting bigger screen sizes by the minute. It is getting increasingly difficult for us to recommend smartphones to people with less than a 5.2-inch display.
Triggered by Samsung’s race for larger screens the new mantra is “Bigger is Better” but is it always so! Sony plans on answering this question with the new Xperia Z3 Compact. Even though, this device looks comprehensive on paper, we need hands-on experience to determine its actual potential.
The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, despite being a ‘miniature’ version of the original superpower – the Z3 – is a highly capable device. Where most small phones suffer from poor built quality, uninspiring designs and cheap materials, the Z3 Compact is miles ahead.
It is slightly taller than the iPhone 5c at 4.6-inches. Despite the lower price tag, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact looks and feels like a proper flagship product. The lack of a large ‘home’ button in the middle lends it the high-end feel.
It is easy to grip, even though the transparent plastic is nothing to die for. The rounded edges are a welcome change from Sony’s usual sharp and pointed edges. Like its elder siblings, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is water-resistant. This is a high-end feature that distinguishes Sony from the rivals.
Sony is offering a 720p panel on the Z3 Compact and even though it sounds inferior to a 1080p panel on paper, and there are no major differences in reality. The Z3 Compact features “Live Color LED” similar to the Xperia Z2. Considering this addition, the Z3 Compact boasts of an above-average display.
The biggest downside to the device is its dated-looking Operating System. Even though this device runs on Android KitKat 4.4, Sony prefers sticking to familiar design policies. As a result, the Xperia Z3 Compact fails to evoke a sense of awe.
Where flagship smartphones are gaining height by the minute, Sony has decided to stick to their ingenious design policy. Their strategies have paid off in the past, and we are waiting to see if history repeats itself!
